short spear: best weapon in 3.0?

I must contend that in the 3.0 AD&D the Shortspear has to be about the best all-around (for the most # of player classes and inherent weapon versatility) weapon. It does 1-8 damage! It can be thrown, used for melee and set. They are cheap and the shortspear weighs less than other spears. And its a simple weapon. Crikey--every class can use it! The technology is so simple it seems like a character in the wilderness could have enough Profession points to make one.

why not carry a greatsword and longbow?

Corlon the rogue votes for two weapon daggers.

And as for spellcasters, crossbows are very nice, as they're the shortspears damage except with none of the str penalties and more range.

I dunno, it's a nice all around weapon possibly for the first one or two levels especially for the sorcerer, but I think other weapons are equally as good.

Then again, I've never set spears for charges really, so maybe that's a very useful ability *shrug*.

Most days I'd prefer a Morningstar, one-handed, 1d8 damage, both bludgeoning and piercing damage, also simple. The thrown spear tends be not that effective with its one-shot-only use at pretty close range. (My humanoids tend to do that, miss, and now they're weaponless.)

Shortspear: A shortspear is small enough to wield one-handed. It may also be thrown.

No 1d8 damage, no setting against a charge, where did you get that from?

It doesn't even have a x3 crit... :\

The shortspear is nothing but a glorified club. :p

Oh... 3.0 :heh:

They changed the names in 3.5 making it nice and confusing. I don't think any stats changed however.

3.0 half spear = 3.5 short spear
3.0 short spear = 3.5 spear
3.0 long spear = 3.5 long spear

Yep, the spear looks quite a bit better. :)

It's two-handed, tho. Martial weapons have similar stats without that restriction.
