Should clerics turn outsiders instead of undead?

Sorry Furn. I'm a shameless self-pimper. :)

But, seriously, the reason I can't reveal it is because it's so basic that I'm surprised no one has thought of it yet....I don't want people taking my precious ideas. :)

Uhm well some pr-classes do this. I know if you're a paladin, in the Scarred Lands at least, many Silver knights can turn both undead AND evil outsiders/chaotic along with elementals. But I guess it's all a matter of if you think the cleric is too powerful as is anyway kenjib.

...Next up, the PrC that turns EVERYTHING that shouldn't be there.

Watch as I use "Turn Arcanists" on that stupid wand-toting wizards guild!

Watch again, as all things not born of this world, including that which has been UNborn, goes 'bamf'!

Technically, viable.. but it'd get dull fast.

The alignment domains definitely suck. If they did make the alignment domain power the ability to turn outsiders of opposing alignments, one of those domains would actually be worth taking.

I have been playing 3rd edition since it's release, and I have yet to see someone take one of the alignment domains for it's spell selection. There are only like one or two spells that a cleric doesn't normally get on the spell list. That is just pathetic.

Not a worry- I understand :D

Hmmmm . . . that could fix *all* the alignment domains! Evil domain=turn good outsiders, chaotic domain=turn lawful outsiders, good domain=turn evil outsiders, lawful domain=turn chaotic outsiders! Instead of a stupid +1 bonus to spells you never use anyway!

That's how it has always worked in my games.

THe problem is outsiders (especially deamons) often have higher CRs than HD, making them very easy to turn. YOu would need to give many of them turn resistance. Often greater than +4

Barbazu CR7 6HD
Pit Fiend CR16 13HD
Balor CR18 13HD
Marilith CR17 9HD
Succubus CR9 6HD
Ghaele CR13 9HD

You could just use their SR as TR. Many of the powerful demons have it, and it would probably give them the edge to make it fair.

I was thinking about how in 1e clerics turned undead and outsiders. I don't know about 2e, but by the time 3e came they had dropped the outsider thing.

Does anyone else think that they got it backwards?

Turning undead is very mythos-specific, but turning outsiders seems to be much more flexible and befitting divinely granted power of all diverse types.

outsiders were specials in 1ed.

i miss the evil undead or clerics being able to turn paladins.

if you look in the FAQ for the WotC site. you will see they addressed this question.

You could also give them a Will save to resist the turn attempt. I think I do this for my alt.priest (see sig).
