Should companies bother with RPGs?

Has any company ever tried to mimic the model that comic book publishers use with multi-title crossovers? In order to fully understand what is going on, you need to buy Book A, Novel B, and Magazine C. Food for thought.

Ich, yeah. It was 2nd edition AD&D. I wasn't a big book buyer then (having all the mighty purchasing power of a 14 year old), and I was always frustrated when half-way through a product it would reference a monster, spell, etc. in another book. In order to fully utilize product A, you'd need half a dozen other (often unrelated) products.

That was one of the main selling points for 3e, if I recall correctly. You're only supposed to need the core books to use any expansion. I'm not sure how well that's held up, but it was a nice idea, anyway.

Although they make more and more references to other books in new publications, WotC still includes at least monster replacement tables for people who don't have those books. Much better than in TSR times .
