Should I buy the Modern Player's Companion?

You have to wonder why the designers of the original game didn't give the Soldier or Gunslinger the +1/level BAB progression, there was probably a reason to keep that for the more melee focused classes.

Guns are just so darn good already...I think it was a game balance thing.

Granted, it seems strange that a Strong Hero 10 will probably be a better marksman than either a Strong 3 / Solider 7 or a Fast 3 / Gunslinger 7...but I just write it off to the idea that Strength includes some degree of coordination.

Bagpuss, those are good observations, and i should note that the MPC was written by Stan! who was on the design team for the d20modern core book and urban arcana.

I'll point this thread in his direction so he can answer your questions about it, but i recommend asking the same question at TGM's very own boards as stan will be able to reply quicker (as he already scans those boards often).

It's a good product and is well written, however it is mostly fluff.

You are kidding right? There is virtually no fluff in the two PDF's which its based off, what fluff are you talking about its about 95% new classes, feats, occupations or equioment, and about 5% discussion about the rules and design choices in D20 Modern.

Not essential, but I recommend it as a good addition to your d20 Modern ruleset, along with Martial Arts Mayhem, Ultramodern Firearms, and Blood and Fist (by Charles Rice; published by RPGObjects).
I have to second this list entirely. Personally, almost every one of our players has used *something* from the pdf versions of MPC 1 and 2 and we love it. It provides some very nice options and extensions to d20 modern.

I have both PDFs and the combined print version from Green Ronin.

I prefered the first PDF volume to the second PDF volume (good stuff in volume 2, but a little too Urban Arcana for my personal tastes), specifically the Class Combos section - combining levels in the various basic classes to come up with character professions like archaeologist - and the new starting occupations.

There are some good new feats, including some that also appear in Ultramodern Firearms d20.

I've actually had a chance to check Urban Arcana, and even that only gives the +1/Level BAB to one Advanced Class the Street Warrior another melee focused class, and a one Prestige Class the Holy/Unholy Knight (although nothing about this class is really melee focused its name seems to reflect that).
