Should I give my player what he wants

I know my answer, but would like some input....

My group just finished G1....One of my players is a Gold Dwarf Fighter 4/ Cleric 5/ Hammer of Moradin 1....This player has always wanted the Hammer of T-Bolts/Girdle/Gauntlet combo, but in 20 years of gaming, has never gotten it....I think I will put the Gauntlets and Girdle in G2, and the Hammer with the 2 White Dragons,in G2. I know this will make him tough as hell, but what the hey, he has always wanted it, why not...The other 2 are Human Barbarian/Rogue 5/5, and Draconic Fighter 3/Sorcerer 5/ Eldritch Knight 1...They also have the Dwarf fighter from the module as an NPC...he is a fighter 9 now....

Plus, the fights will be extremely tough from there on out....

What do y'all think...

I don't see any reason not to make your player very happy. The save DC's for the death effect and especially the stun effect are are not so high that the giants will be failing them regularly. Remember that the HoT is Large, so the dwarf gets a -2 penalty on his attack rolls.

Yes just to not give him/her what they expect.

Be creative in how they get it, what it does, how it can be used. Level the item is one way, the player has to expend EXP to increase the abilities. Limit the use 3 time/day is another. Placing restrictions, weapon is +2 on clear days, +3 on cloudy days, +4 on stormy days...

You work with your players but think about balance.

Those restrictions are good, some use for Control Weather spell ;)

No, actually don't limit the item. The player will be pissed if he's been wanting one for ages and then gets a cheapo version.

Personally, I'd tend to make the search for such things into quests of their own. I rarely leave Holy Avengers lying around where the party Paladin will just find it. Same applies here.

If, however, our overall game plan does not have room for such quests, then you can go ahead and place them in the modules. Note, however, that if there isn't equivalent neat stuff in there for the rest of the party, they'll feel put out.

The trick of balance isn't to keep individuals low in power, but to make sure everybody in the party is reasonably effective. If this combo is going to make the dwarf really tough compared to everyone else, you ought to give the others compensation.

The combo just really isn't all that powerful since a save has been allowed. I would go with it as is.

There really is no time for side quests, they are racing against a deadline, to keep the Giants from allying with one another and attacking the Dwarves...The characters will balance out well, because I have something in mind for the other 2 after the Giants...The Idea for the Draconic, is to mate with a powerful Silver Dragon, and in so doing, will 1) bring his Draconic blood out even more, so making him a half-dragon, and 2) his offspring will become heros on their own....and for the Rogue/Barbarian, he will become Bonded with a Celestial, which will grant him powers...sorta a mod to the Dragon Magazine PrC.....

It's cool sometimes to get what you really want to make your character what you imagine. :)

Shouldn't become the norm, so it gets boring, but every now and then is just fine.

I haven't looked to see how the combo works in 3E, but if you have any issues with power concerns, you could have the combo be a major dwarven "symbol of state" that he'd be expected to return to the Dwarven King/Chieftain/whatever at some not-too-distant point in time. That way he gets to use it for a while, but if it becomes a balance issue, you can pull it away. And by giving it back willingly, he gains great honor and reknown. If you like, perhaps he can request its use on a permanent "loan" basis from the state - or maybe just for major quests that impact the Dwarven state.
