I don't see anywhere where rpgs are being used as a defense. In other words, from what I've seen Flemons has been portrayed as a schizophrenic/psychotic who happened to also play Dungeons and Dragons. That's a far cry from saying that rpgs caused him to commit the crime, only that they didn't help his condition, and isn't anything to call Pierre Savoie or Mike Stackpole about. I have no doubt that rpgs, used in the wrong circumstances, hurt more than they help.

While I'm a bit disheartened at the repeated references to FRPG games, the real controlling issue is his mental state.

OTOH...

He's BLACK?! The last black gamer I saw was in my mirror!

Parents/Lawyers/People in general will always find a scapegoat. Instead of parents admitting to being bad parents they will blame a game or TV. I am sure there were clues to his mental instability before he had the hobby, and if he didn't have it something else be blamed.

I don't know- I have a relative who is similarly afflicted...there really weren't any concrete signs until she went absolutely nutso. Was she odd? Yes. But bughouse? No. She's now on meds and is doing quite well.

Still...30 is a bit old for one's first psychotic break (if that is what actually happened). My understanding is that they usually happen in their victims' teens or early twenties.

There's evidently something wrong with this guy's mental health....it mentions he attacked an uncle with a sword in 1998...sounds like a pattern.

Almost sounds like a paranoid schizophrenic or some other form of personality or psychotic disorder. Unfortunately, if he's imprisoned, it's unlikely he'll ever get the help he apparently needs.
