*Sigh* I was hoping for something more...

Reveal, I feel your pain. Really I do. With the responses I typically get from my players, I would have been happy to see something like what you have.

I even award experience for notable postings on the private forum. Still nothing for almost all intents and purposes.

*sigh*

In the game I play in, we have a board we post to. For a while I posted extensively. Every so often, other folks would contribute. After a while, I just got tired of posting stuff to entertain myself. So I have slowed waaaaaaaay down and I devote more of my time to things like EN World and the campaign I run.

Not everyone else is into the RP online. But there is a lot of stuff that my players want to do that would be well handled online instead of at the table. Since I have a 7 player group, I try to avoid some of the rather singular interactions when at the game table. Otherwise I end up with one player wanting to get involved in a lengthy private discussion with an NPC while the other 6 players do nothing in the game.

If I could just get them to post. Or email.

*sigh*

I'm not sure how "technically inclined" your players are, but I've found that IM is a very good substitute for face to face RP. I actually prefer it over posts and e-mail when away from the table. :)

It's Eberron...if he does well, he can have a Horrid Owl. :)

You perch atop the roof, scanning the surrounding area. The wind blows ever so slightly, just enough to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. It's a good wind; one that ecompasses the smells of the city. You smell machinery, bakeries, people and.... something... You can't put your finger on it, you just know it's there; something familiar. You close your eyes, trying to single it out. There! There it is! You smile, as the scent brings a warm feeling to you. You open your eyes, turning slowly to greet your new....

OH MY GOD! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!

If the player does get me something better, I will give him a construct owl. I have the stats already written. :)

... and then there is the "whiplash" GM who tries to give out something cool, but then tries to "balance" it out -- just in case he's been too generous.

GM: "You spend weeks carrying the dragon egg and out hatches a dragon hatching!"
Player: "Yeah!"
GM: "Now everytime you cast a spell, it gives you 1d4 subdual damage as it claws your shoulder in fear, Mr. Wizard."
Player: "Uh, thanks,"

GM: "You've shown mercy to creatures that other men would kill outright, you're warhorse starts to develop two nubs on its back."
Player: "I'll take pegesi wings for $200, GM."
GM: "Your right!"
Player: "Cool. I can be patient and wait for the wings to grow."
Several sessions later ....
GM: "Your pegesi can fly now!"
Player: "Great, I go into a flying dive at the monster!"
GM: "You start the dive and then your mount pulls up. You'll have to retrain it to be a flying combat warhorse and you will also now need to make Animal Handling, Ride and Ride (winged Mount) checks to pull off any sort of combat stuff."
Player: "WTF?"

Wait. So is the player of the Ranger the ONLY player who took you up on your offer to internet-roleplay? If that's the case, I'd be thrilled he participated, not lament his lack of adjectives or whatever.

BTW, what he wrote seems okay to me. I mean, he asked you where the highest point in the city was and all that. Plus you fundamentally told him "no" to a couple of his questions, so maybe he didn't want to invest too many words into describing something that you might rule as not having happened.

PS: mechanical owl familiar = awesome!

The wasn't the only one who took me up on my offer. Another player did but I haven't done anything with them yet.

I guess I just expected something more general as far as the actual gaining of a new companion than "I go to A and get B." Just seems way to impersonal for such a personal act.
