Signing up for DDI to download all the eZines - plus Terminating subs

Now that the last Dragon and Dungeon are out I'd expect some 1 month subs to join, download all the issues then unsub.

And additionally a fair amount of calls to customer service to end subscriptions because of 'no new content'.

Are folks doing either of these?

The current DDI Group numbers haven't changed significantly since the numbers stabilized after the September forum emergency revamp.

If folks are joining and quiting, I'm questioning any usefulness of the Group numbers as a measure of DDI subscriptions.

Speaking for me personally... I still am a member of DDI not because of the two magazines, but because of the Character & Monster Builders, and the Compendium. So long as I am running a 4E game... I will keep an active subscription going because those three tools alone are worth the seven bucks a month. The mags were nice, don't get me wrong... but I do not think they were ever the driving force behind people's subscriptions. I've always felt that they were "added bonuses" you got for your DDI subscription, not the reason for the subscription itself.

Based anecdotely from just my memories of people's posts here on EN World (faulty as they may be)... that seemed to be true for many people who had a subscription. The tools were the prime motivator for spending the cash, the magazines were just a nice extra.

That's my situation. I just re-upped my sub for the year.

I know some in my group have let their subs lapse, but I don't think it had anything to do with the magazines.

PS

When I had an account it was for the magazines and tools. I suspect I would have kept it as well.

Doing this has been in the back of my mind for a while now. Is it possible to get the mags without downloading the software that I'll never use?

There's no more software to download, all the tools are online. So yeah, if you subscribe for a month... you can download all the magazines without ever touching the tools if you didn't want to.

Although, the one pain in the butt you'll find is that you'll download full "issues" of both magazines for the first several years, but then there's a period in the middle where they didn't combine all the articles in the month together into one download package, you had to do each article individually. Which was kind of annoying because it took a lot longer, and made organization a pain. Fortunately they eventually started recombining each monthly issue together again.

Out of the 71 eDragon and 71 eDungeon issues, there were 25 of each that were not compiled.
3 or 4 of those were during the 2007-2008 between editions period when they were effectively on hiatus (3 or 4 issues over 8 months).

46 of each were compiled.

The uncompiled issues are a combination of web articles and actual PDFs.

The number that appears on the actual group page stabilized at 73392 on Sept. 12, 2013 after the forum rebuild. It has not changed at all since.

The number that appears on the My Group page of the My Account Tab stabilized at 87435 a day later on Sept. 13, 2013. It has varied between 87434 and 87437, but is currently 87435.

On Sept. 9 (before the forum rebuild) the DDI Group was listed as 88137 members.

Of the 6 groups I track only 2 have changed membership on the actual Group page: Living Forgotten Realms up 3, and D&D up 3.

The My Groups list has seen more variance: D&D Next up 23 to 8774, D&D up 26 to 5869, Playtesting down 1, LFR up 9 to 2881, and Online RPG down 5 to 45701.

I let my Wizards subscription lapse months ago and didn't even notice. Thankfully a friend still has one because I'm curious about this month's time travel articles. Has anyone read those?

If you're thinking of unsubscribing from WotC, maybe consider getting a subscription to EN World. Russ is having a subscription drive (see the note at the top of the forums), and I'm sure he needs the cash to keep his servers running more than Wizards does.
