Silence Spell

We recently trapped a Dragon who was also a level 20 wizard in a small room (by circumstance) an used "Silenced" (level 2 cler/bar spell) on some coins so that it couldnt cast any spells (including to heal itself among other crazy 9th level wizard spells).

Does this really work this way still? No one ever figured out people casting 20 feet radius silenece spells on coins was a bit powerful for completely neutralizing Wizards, Clerics, Druids, Bard etc. etc.?

And don't mention Silent Spell feat - ok how many people actually take that - and even so, you now only negate the power of 99% of the wizards etc.

It's a classic tactic to take out spellcasters - I remember using it in a hiighschool game ca 15 years ago. Of course a silent _dragon_ is still not harmless!

Yes it works that way. It's usually not to hard to leave the area of a Silence spell, especially if you are a dragon.

Normally it's pretty damn hard to trap a dragon in a small room. By the time they are able to cast 20th level spells, they're usually pretty big and break through most barriers. The Silence would also hinder your own spellcasters, and the dragon should normally be able to handle a couple of melee types one on one.

Sounds like you got a lucky set of circumstances, and a dumb dragon.

It's one reason Silent and Still Spell feats are very good choices for a sorcerer.

Less so for a Wizard, because the wizard needs to prepare spells in advance. But the sorcerer can simply use a 4th level slot to cast a Silent Dispel Magic, or escape a grapple with a Still Dimension Door, or whatever.

For bards, there's a spell in Song and Silence called "Joyful Noise" that suppresses magical silence (with no verbal component, naturally :) ).

Alternatively, the dragon can use the Snatch feat to throw the annoying characters carrying the coins out of the radius... :)

Dragons (& Druids over level 5) can usually fly out of the area.

Wizards & others should invest in a small lock-box to store such annoying coins within. (Emanations can't go around corners, ya see...)

The question I've always had is, "Does Sonic damage work inside of a Silence spell?". If the Silence spell suppresses all sound, then it would logically follow that sonic damage doesn't appear to function. Also, what effects does this have on explosive shockwaves, which are also a form of sound? If a nuclear weapon explodes inside of a Silence spell, does that mean that the inability to create sound means the inability to create a blast wave, which would then be equivalent to exploding the weapon in space, creating only a burst of hard radiation?

There was an extensive discussion on said subject a few months ago. Of course, it wasn't resolved. My take on it would be that silence does not negate sonic damage because (personal explanation follows) Silence only negates sounds that are in the hearing range.
