Silence spell

First Post
Hello all, I'll first apologize. I cant seem to find exactly what I need on any of the d&d sites I frequent. Hopefully someone here can help.

The silence spell has many uses, I would like any and all that anyone can think of ;)

Primarily however, I need a step by step instruction on how and why silence can/cannot counter spells. Ready actions are the easiest way it seems.

I've tried to come up with my own rational arguements, but I am currently in the middle of an argument between several people about various aspects of the spell. Any and all help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Cast silence on the monk or (if you forgot to pack a monk on this trip) on a summoned air elemental and send him/it after the enemy spellcaster.

Cast it on a pebble and chuck it at a spellcaster. All you have to do is touch attack and he's quiet.

Cast it on a window/door before you bust it down.

Cast on the party's scout so that he always succeeds on move silently. This will negate listen checks, obviously, but I find the trade-off to be well worth it. Especially if that sucker is invisible too. :).

Cast a delayed silence on a spellcaster's food and/or drink. (Uses the delay spell feat, which is in the FRCS.)

This one probably doesnt do much ;) The casters body would block the emanation long before the effect got to his mouth. Unless of course when you cast it on the object every piece of it is silenced so his whole insides are all silenced from his mouth on down..lol.. but somehow I think 'eating' the object would destroy it and cancel the spell.. hmm.. will have to think about that one, has to be a way to make it work

My personal current favorite is:

Cast silence on tanglefoot bag, throw it at the caster either as a readied action to negate a spell or just whenever to mess them up badly ;)

You may well be right; it would be an odd ruling no matter how you slice it. I've never used this in a game. I just came up with the idea after my DM (way back in 1e) polymorphed me into a glass of water and then drank me.

And if you are interested in the no-holds barred best counter for a silence spell? Minor Globe of Invulnerability. (at least in 3e... in 3.5e they have muddied the waters about the spell, rendering it a little confusing and somewhat less useful if the more restrictive way of understanding it is used. C'est la vie)

Cheers

I have found that shutting up is a really good way to go silent.

Casting it on a pebble and throwing it is easily countered by either a) covering the pebble thereby blocking the emanation or b) throwing it back at you or c) having a fighting type pick it up and move to the party, thus silencing the parties spellcasters.

The next 2 are very valid uses however the silenced rogue cannot verbally communicate with the party and risks silencing the party spellcasters if forced back within 20ft of them.

Other options are casting directly at the person or casting it on a point in space near the target (either as a standard action or from a readied action). The former gives them a save and the latter is vulnerable to the target moving out of the area or putting cover between them and the point thus blocking the emanation.
