Silicone Dice - What're They Like?

So, I've noticed sets of silicone dice appearing with greater frequency, and that got me to wondering why. What are the pros and cons in use, in wear and tear, in fairness? Don't they just bounce around like a toddler who's just ingested their own bodyweight in sugar? Are they a gimmick or are they actually a serious addition to the dice field (just imagine, a field of dice, dice stretching from horizon to horizon... Glorious!)?

I don't know if they're what you're talking about, but I have a set of rubber dice included (as a gag) with something I kickstarted, and they are utterly unusable (except for laughs), because they absolutely will bounce onto the floor, and probably not in the direction you rolled them in.

In my experience, the silicone dice are also quite bouncy. I don't know if I'd say they're unusable, but they're right on the borderline. I've tested a bunch of sets at Gen Con over the past few years. I think you can manage if you're rolling them on a surface that'll mute the bounciness. I wouldn't buy a set for myself, though.

Never used them, but looking at the photos, we would not allow them at our table because of how hard the numbers would be to read. It will be hard to fill in the numbers. Regular ink will not stick to silicone. If you want to ink in the numbers, you'll need special plastics markers.

Saw them at the convention yesterday and did not like them. There were big d20s you could buy with 3 different level of softnessesses. They would be easy on the bare foot if stepped on and you could throw them at the players if you are that type of person. Maybe if the noise of dice on tables bothers you.

I thought they felt like those kids toys you throw in the window and they 'crawl' down, or the sticky hand thing you can whip around.

Wait dice can break when dropped?

Since 1989 we have had zero dice break, not even low-quality dice that come with stuff. Many have been in service well over 30 years. Or do you mean can't break other things?

Your standard plastic or acrylic dice are nigh unbreakable sure. But in these days of premium gamer equipment, there are dice of glass, stone, ceramic, and other materials, some of which may chip or break if you drop them on a hard surface.

As for silicone dice - they are light, bouncy, and quiet.
