Well, I'm playing a Monk right now in a low magic Campaign. It's not that bad. It hurts for a Martial Artist to have a 3/4 BAB but the good saves and the extra speed is a nice bonus.
Flurry of blows can be called flurry of misses.
My monk took Martial Weapon Prof. Glaive (called it Naginata) and uses this Polearm with good effect in conjunction with Combat Reflexes and Impr. Unarmed Strike.
Martial Weapon Prof. like a fighter, ranger or paladin would have been nice, since the exotic weapons are very ... hmm ... useless.
What hurts more is the need to split up the ability points among STR for attack and damage, DEX for AC and ranged attacks and saves, and WIS for AC and Saves and DC vs. Stunning Fist et al. .
The paladin has the same problem but at least a high BAB and good saves thanks to divine grace.
Over all the monk is not top of the hill but far from useless for a group. With 4 skillpoints and no armor he can tumble and jump like flea
