Simpsons Comic Book Guy = Modern Day Gamer?

Thankfully there is nobody like that in my gaming group- we are all high-functioning nerds and dorks. However, every game store I have ever been in has at least 3 or more patrons who are the comic book guy to a T. I mean same mannerisms, looks, and creepiness. I have a theorey- the original comic book guy cloned himself and made a bajillion copies, then spread them across the world. Luckily, the comic book guy will never reproduce outside of a test tube, so when the current batch of clones die out and genetic degradation sets in, the army of whiny behemoths will finally be laid to rest. :p

In the early 90's, during the heyday of 2nd Edition, I've had the pleasure of meeting quite a few gamers whom resembled the Simpsons Comic Book guy, in personality if not also appearance.

However, times change.

So, do you think this stereotype still holds true?

An awful number of the players I know are IT people. A good half of them are unemployed. I am not in IT, that must be why I am the DM.

I know this man. His name is Dennis. I swear to God. dead ringer. scarry.
Really? I thought his name was Alan. Oh, I am sorry. Alan ((last name deleted in case he is around here)) is a thousand times worse than comic store guy. Actually there are about a dozen of these creatures I have encountered with varying body weights. Working at a game store will do that to you.

Yes, there are more than enough of these people roaming about to keep the stereotype alive.

Oh dear me, yes. They are everywhere, in any game store, in any city. They are there. If he is not the man behind the counter, he is his chum chortling with him about the latest group pow-wow in Evercrack. They will not be contained, you will submit. Or as the Cybermen used to say "You will become like us".

See, it's happening already... Worst.Reply.Ever.

Aaaaarggh

The proprietor of Fantasy Zone Comics in NK, RI--the fat, the "beard", the 'tude, the whole thing.

This reminds me that I forgot to buy a boxful of Savage Swords there once. Damn.

Have you been to Gen Con? It is true. There are plenty of gamers that don't fit the stereotype - but if any stereotype has a massive base in truth, it is Comic Book Guy.

Yep.

The FLGS constantly has a gaggle of these guys hanging around near the counter trying to out-Alphageek each other.

But otherwise, I've never met anybody like this in my life, and I both gamed and knew all the geeks at school (hell, technically I was one too).

So what do these guys do when they're not in the FLGS? As well as gaming, I'm a sports-, bookstore- and music-geek too, and I never see Comic Store Guys anywhere else.

I never went to school with any of them (and I went to quite a few schools, let me tell you) so what gives? Are they just born as adults and then spend every minute of their lives between the FLGS, geek conventions and home?

Where do they go to die? Perhaps we'll never know...

Well, he's nothing like any of the people in my gaming group.

I Think CSG stypes are pretty rare here in the UK - I've spotted a couple at GenconUK but I think they might have been American industry professionals over for the Con... :]

In the UK most nerds don't have driving licenses and we have to _walk_ to get around, this keeps us sleek & well-toned...

I once knew a Comic Book / Game Store owner who said that this was the stereotype for CB/GS owners. Both he and five others that he knew all fit the physical description. None of them were virgins (as far as I knew) but they all certainly had something of the attitude.

(Pol Rating: 1/ 10; Worst reference ever.)
