Our group has done this before to combat a lack of players. In our experience it's usually sloppy. Usually characters don't get proper development and players have to constantly be reminded they control other characters, not to mention how weird it is for the players characters to interact with one another. If your players are sharp, and your not planning on doing much role playing then I think it would be fine though
