Single weapon fighting?

And don't forget that using a one-handed weapon two-handed gives you the 1.5 strength bonus. Admittedly, this might not help many save fighters, who might as well be using greatswords...

You don't. If you're using a shield, then you have a penalty equal to the Armor Check penalty of the shield, but use a masterwork buckler and you have nothing to worry about.

This is what first occured to me. If you have at least a +2 Str Bonus and are using a medium weapon then you can choose to alternate between using it in one hand or two, and when using it in two you would get x1.5 str bonus to damage.

However as to your original point, I would say there is something of a hole there, in terms of utility.

Technically, no, but you avoid an attack penalty for using a shield or TWF, which are the other alternatives. So, I guess, optimally finessing a rapier...
