Six From Gate Pass - A War of the Burning Sky Campaign (3.5)

Diogenes smiles at the warm reception, but his eyes narrow when he hears mention of Shealis. He peers nervously over at the students near the moat and quietly says: "Its best we don't discuss anything out here, follow me inside." After patting his belly he says: "I could use a snack anyway."

You're led through the courtyard and into the school via the large iron front doors. Diogenes speaks over his shoulder as you walk: "Welcome to 'the castle' as we call it. It is here, in the main campus building, that house the training halls where we are taught spell dueling and other uses of the arcane arts. If you're wondering why there are hardly any students in the halls, you can thank our cowardly headmaster for going into hiding. Most of the other students have followed suit. Anyway, the main campus also holds our library, experimentation laboratories and most importantly..." he holds his words till you turn down a certain hallway and into another room "the kitchen!"

The kitchen is large and the centre of the room is dominated by a large butcher block preparation table with many stools surrounding it. Well used pots and pans hang from pegs along the walls and a few large stoves sit along one wall. Two open doors lead out of this room, one that apparently heads into a massive dining hall and the other into a stuffed pantry.

"Sit down, sit down, make yourselves comfortable while I prepare us something to enjoy whilst we talk." Diogenes closes the doors to the room and then holds his hand by the stove while muttering: "good, good the coals are still hot."

You all relax around the table while the balding wizard puts on a kettle for tea and brings out some dark loaves of bread, a few different mountain goat cheeses that are so popular in Gate Pass and some bottles of wine. He also puts out some plates, goblets and some knives.

Finally he sits down, takes a heel of bread and fills a goblet with wine. Looking pleased he says: "Well, now we can talk of matters of import. Anything can be solved on a full stomach. So you have an issue with Shealis eh? You said she is in possession of something you need? I thought something was up with her tonight. She was minding her business as per usual but, while I was out for a smoke, I saw her familiar come flying into the building about an hour ago and last I heard, Shealis rushed into her room and hasn't come out since."

Hrimr grabs some cheese and smears it onto a piece of the black bread. He shoves it into his mouth and nods as if he agrees with the taste.

"She appears to have mistaken us for Ragesians and took something that could help both our causes. We'd like to talk to her to see if we can come up with an mutually beneficial agreement."

Bannock sits at the table, wordlessly gobbling the cheese and bread, having not eaten since breakfast. These wizards ate well! He could get used to a place like this.

"Mmph... pathh... mrph... the wine!"

He'd been quietly listening to Diogenes speak, unsure of his trustworthiness. His gut gives him a certain feeling about this man's motivations:

[sblock="Bannock's sense motive results"]Bannock, you don't get enough of a hunch on the man to make any determination. As far as you can tell, he is a portly wizard who likes to eat."[/sblock]

"Ahhh, well its not really any of my concern why you want to speak with her. I don't really care what you do to her either. Can't stand the she-elf. Fireball this and lightning bolt that. Doesn't anyone care for the subtleties of enchantment and illusion anymore? Ugh and her familiar. Seriously, who bonds with a glowing ball of light? In my father's day, a gentleman chose a raven. I don't trust anyone who binds a planar entity to them. No sir."

Larion sips some wine and retorts: "Listen here you middling corpulent mage. My master's familiar is a sign of her vast control of the arcane arts. She is a powerful evoker and should be treated with respect. Especially by her lessers..."

Diogenes looks embarrassed for having gone on a rant and takes a big gulp of wine: "Who is this guy anyway, Shealis' boyfriend? A friend of yours Arnir? Anyway, I can show you where her room is if you like."

Alric accepts a cup of wine and a small bit of cheese and nods gratefully to the portly mage. Despite Diogenes' warm hospitality Alric appears somewhat uncomfortable in a mage's domain and his eyes dart around as if he expects some unannounced sorcery will be chaotically and randomly flung at him. Here at Gabal's you see how a lifetime in Ragesia, where sorcery is feared and reviled, affects one's sensitivities. Yet he does his best to show dignity and respect to Diogenes who has welcomed him here.

At Larion's bellowing Alric simply smiles wryly and chuckles to himself, savoring the elf's indignation.

"Please ignore this one honorable Diogenes, he is of no consequence. Please, if you could show us to Shealis' room. Finding her is of perilous importance."

Lars eats greedily from cheese and bread, and sipping a little wine. He remains quiet and subdued, keenly observing everything going on around him.

Diogenes replies: "Right, her room. No problem. Its in the south tower, third floor dormitory, first door on the left. I'll happily join you, just in case she gets out of hand."

He spreads a bit more cheese on some bread and takes a big bite. After swallowing, he perks up and says: "Oh Arnir, I forgot to mention that I can grab you a few things from the library if you're in need. Well any of you really. Gabal's charges standard market rates for any arcane scrolls or spell components you may want. Oh, I should mention that our illustrious leader does not subscribe to the schools of enchantment or necromancy ..." he pauses to sip some wine, "which is a constant thorn in my side ... so don't get your hopes up for any of those. So, place your orders now and then I'll run down to the library for you while you finish your snacks. I can be back in a matter of minutes to take you to Shealis' room."

OOC: Apologies guys! I didn't get any email notification of any of these posts, and was so busy with school that I didn't think to check! sorry for the delay!

Arnir looks up after taking a big bite of bread and cheese and a large gulp of wine. He clears his throat and grins "Don't worry Dio- Larion is just a mite defensive after Bannock here threatened to give him an overly close shave. Hopefully he'll help us out with Shealis...right Larion?"

Arnir listens to the back and forth as he eats, and then his eyes brighten at the mention of scrolls... "Since Gabal isn't around, do you think we could do four-for-three? I haven't got enough gold for four scrolls, but i feel like the situation being what it is, I could use all the help I can get!"

Larion merely grins: "Were I you, I would be more concerned with formulating my arguments. Shealis holds the case and it is her decision as to what happens to it. I am merely along for the ride. Hurry along with your shopping, the hour is late and I grow weary of being around you all."

Diogenes raises an eyebrow and looks from Larion to Arnir: "Who is this guy?! Actually, you know what? I don't care. As for the scrolls, I'll do you this one favour Arnir, but my pockets aren't deep and I'll have to cover the cost. Therefore, whichever scroll is the cheapest will be the free one. I'm hoping you're going to humiliate Shealis so I'll consider this an investment in a good laugh. What scrolls do you want?"
