Size of character parties

We tend to play 1 DM w/ 3-5 players. If we have only 3-4 then I considering adding a NPC if all the roles aren't covered. If we are playing with 5 PC then I don't introduce NPC's or henchmen if possible. I think the game gets less and less fun the more players you add over 4-5.

Drumroll please ......

13 players, 14 characters, assorted cast of thousands for NPCs (2-12 along for the ride at any one time)
We have a DM and a G.O.D. /game operations designer/ (me) just to keep things straight. After three plus years we have had few complaints.

BTW at one time we had 17 players at the table (once in a lifetime shot let me tell yoy) but have never had less than seven at a time.

Sunday game: 7 PCs. No henchment or NPCs yet but I know at least one of them is interested in getting some (somebody has to guard the horses).

Friday Game: 4 PCs. Occational NPC.

Old Tuesday game: 6 PCs plus a DMPC.

The party in my current Wilderlands C&C PBEM currently comprises 6 PCs (Assn 4, 2 Ftr 1, Rgr 1, Wiz 1, Rog 1), and 6 level 0 Tharbrian slave girls they're escorting to freedom (hopefully).

The party in my current Moldvay B/X D&D PBEM currently comprises 3 PCs (F5, M-U 4, F4), 1 cohort/2ndary PC (C4), and 3 NPCs (C3, T4, T7).

Edit: The party in my tabletop game (3.5e, restarting as C&C) is normally 4 PCs (Clr 8, Wiz 8, Rgr 9, Swashbuckler 10) with maybe 1 NPC cohort.

The party in the 3.5e tabletop game I'm playing in is 4 PCs (Ftr 5, Rgr 5, Wiz 4/Rog 1, Clr 5), with 1 NPC.

I run three games. One has three players, plus myself as GM. The others have nine players each (plus myself as GM). Honestly, I prefer four to six players, but I simply don't have the time to further divide my groups, and only a few of my players can play the Sunday game (with only three players).

If I could find a way to pear down my groups without sacrificing good players who also happen to be friends, I'd do it in a heart beat.
