Size of character parties

For parties that use henchmen, do the players control them, or the DM? And if the player controls them, does that dilute their ability to focus on their characters, and do any of the in character acting out that some people do, or to pay attention during battles because they have to manage too many things, etc?

Normally SIX in my Living Greyhawk group, just dropped to 5, but will return to 6 shortly enough.

SIX players in my Ulek group, about to become 7 characters with 1 cohort being added.

SIX players in my Age of Worms group.

Cheers!

From 4-8 PCs at the moment. I used to regularly have 11 each game, but that became just too much. A divorce, two babies, and a fight later, I was down to five. Then I jumped back up to eight, and I've told everyone that 8 is a hard ceiling.

I absolutely dispise multiple characters to one pc or even hirelings or NPCs that follow the group around. Im not even a fan of familiars, but I do allow who ever to do what ever.
Uhm, extra bodies are why big monsters have cleave! ;)

There are four people at our table- 1 GM and 3 Players.

Present campaigns-
- The Riders of the Axe
-- Lady Melainthé "Mel" Galanodel - Rogue/Thief Acrobat - reluctant leader
-- Lelenia Galanodel - Sorcerer/Divine Oracle - Cousin to Mel & Wife to...
-- Grayson Noble - Ranger/Fighter/Deepwood Sniper - Former soldier, distant cousin to his wife Le (no blood relation), and cousin to Mel
-- Brottor RedStone - Cleric of Barronor Truesilver - one of the few male Clerics of the goddess of marriage. Soft and gentle, kind and considerate (hard to believe I play him :) )

--- Amilor (last name eludes my ability to find) - Paladin of Heironious - rescued him and he joined soon after. To marry Mel.
--- Cromwell Stonefist - Fighter/Ranger1/Dwarven Defender - Cousin to our former leader
--- Bromsby Delancy - Wizard/Bard - old family friend

Brottor has leadership, but the goons and the cohort are left to guard our two homes.

Seven party members, four characters- two played by me.

Our most reluctant leader player is taking the leadership of the group, while my wife and I tend to our daughter.

Length response, but I am bored, and punchy from to little sleep in the last three days (9 hours).

The only game we have going at the moment is myself (the DM) and my wife (the PC) with a variable number of NPCs hanging around depending on campaign circumstances (as many as 10, as few as one).

I've recently tried to scale down the number of NPCs because it is a bit of headache to keep track of them all.

I've DMed and played in groups as large as 9 players plus the DM...also headache inducing. As DM it's difficult to keep everyone focused, as a player it's difficult to get any spotlight time.

My best campaigns have been the ones with the fewest players, current one included. Fewer players means more spotlight time and more interaction with the world, the plot, the NPCs and the campaign itself.
