Size of character parties

I'm currently running two Ptolus groups, one with 4 players, one with 6 players.

I'll be having a few other players drop in to one or the other group for cameo sessions as well, and will run some cross-over sessions from time to time.

I prefer groups of 6 to 7 players and characters.

4-5 PCs (we've had as many as 6, but that didn't last), sometimes with some combination of tagalong NPCs, cohorts, animal companions, and hirelings. Right now there are 4 PCs, one cohort and one tagalong NPC noncombatant.

I'm playing in a group right now with 5 PCs (+DM)

Before that I was in a group of 7 people (6 PCs, 1 DM)

Before that I was in a group with 4 people (3 PCs, 1 DM)

Before that I was in a group with 5 people (4 PCs, 1 DM)

Before that I was in a group with 6 people (5 PCs, 1 DM)

Each group (except my current, it's a new group) has lasted at least 2-3 years. So I guess the "average" party size I've played with has been 4.6 PCs.

Normally, 5 - 8 players with 1 character each and maybe 1 or 2 henchmen/cohorts.

Largest ever, 12 players with 16 characters between them. What a headache, but what fun those days were. :D

Current campaign, Mongoose's Drow War campaign with 8 players with 1 character each.

PS: I don't count familiars or animal companions. They are class abilities, not characters.
