Feh, tables will never work in vbb code. Try this link.
My idea was to slim down the skill table a bit by combining skills that seem logically related, but just use a different stat, into one skill. I also did some seat-of-the-pants refactoring to reflect my biases, for instance, I though Wisdom worked better than Int for spellcraft, in regards to identifying a spell as it was being cast or similar uses, since wisdom is used for other "noticing" type skills like spot and listen.
The basics is, each row in the table is a single skill. Combined with the stat in the column, that's your skill modifier for that activity. For instance, your skill in, um, I need to rename some of these things, say "Twiddling Mechanical Things" becomes Open Lock when used with Dex, and Disable Device when used with Int.
Knowledge- Arcane is used for knowledge checks with Int, spellcraft (for arcane spells) with Wisdom (because I wanted to use wisdom for spur-of-the-moment spotting type things, I'm not sold on that one), and Use Magical Device with Charisma, (as a class feature of rogues probably, rather like Animal Empathy went away from 3.0->3.5). For a penalty, you could use it to recognize (ie spellcraft) divine spells too, probably at a -5 or so.
Similar crosspollenations occur in other rows, which should be obvious from the table, mock me or ask questions if it's not.
Knowledge-local seems to cross with Gather Info to me. You can use it well, and probably get a bonus in your hometown, and then as you venture farther away or into more foreign areas, it's more difficult for you to pick up the local rumors.
This isn't finalized yet. For instance, I'd like to find a good way to cross Decipher Script with Forgery, they seem somewhat similar. Appraise probably shouldn't be one skill, but should be a usage of Craft and Profession- if you can Craft swords, you can tell what they're worth, too. And Use Rope just bugs me, it's too specific to be a whole skill.
This would take some rejiggling of the classes to implement; rogues, for instance, would stand to lose some skill points, since several of their iconic skills have been collapsed.
