Skill Training - Take Away The Nerf Bat

I don't think skill training needs to be changed.

Yes the multi class feat is better...as long as you meet the prereqs. In this case your warlord was able to. If he was a charisma warlord and wanted arcana, then he would probably have to take skill training.

Further, the multi classing feat can only be used the first time. Then you have to start using skill training to get other skills. So I think the feat is fine as is.

Actually reading it over I have to say we don't have to unnerf Skill Training for 4e.

See in Saga the Skill training feat works on one class skill, thats it.

So here are my reason that my patch on saga doesn't work in 4e anymore.

1) 4e lets you pick any skill.

2) 4e has less skills then Saga does.

I still don't like the fact that heros with high Int aren't awarded in the skills area, but the other benifets are good enough for me.

My 4e multiclassing fix addresses this. My multiclassing feats don't give free skill proficiency. Instead, they require you to already be proficient in a representative skill.

There's some interesting psychology going on here. Yes, multiclass feats are often strictly better than the equivalent skill training feats, assuming you meet the prereqs. No, that doesn't make multiclassing feats a must-have option. No, that doesn't make skill training broken.

Someday I'm going to make a D&D homebrew, and its going to have the following feats:

Feat: Weasels
Prerequisite: Charisma 13
Benefit: You have two weasels.

Feat: Improved Weasels
Prerequisite: None
Benefit: You have three weasels.

I fully predict that immediately upon release, everyone starts ranting about how broken Improved Weasels is, and how its a must have because its better than Weasels. Soon, ever player character in my game will be running around with the Improved Weasels feat. And eventually someone will ask them, "Why do you have weasels? What are they for?" And they'll answer, "I don't know!!!"

I actually think skill training (via multi or otherwise) is very cool in 4E, with the skill challenge rules.

The MC feats just encourage you to do it at least once, is all ;)

Simple fix.

Either have the skill training feat give an additional bonus, or make the multiclass training give you a little less.

For example....

Skill Focus
You have spent a great deal of time focusing on a particular area of study, giving you more knowlage in the subject then a normal person.
You can training in a skill, and an additional +2 feat bonus to that skill.

Multiclass:
You can training in a class skill of the class, but take a -2 penalty to skill checks because of your divided focus.

Just of the top of my head. Not to drastic, so as not to be too game breaking.

I find the feat fine right now, but I was going to split the difference w/AMP Productions and say maybe just a +1 to the skill you get w/feat training.
