If it's anything like the L5R tea ceremony encounters that occured when I was running it, then the piles of bodies and loot strewn about are pretty big indicators that the tea ceremony is finished.

Or would that have been two distinct encounters? Firstly, the peaceful, tranquil tea ceremony (do skill trick, impress host), then encounter gone mad, blood and gore everywhere, loot appearing out of the bushes, strewing all over the place in a messy fashion(repeat skill trick impress loot).

The ambiguity of the wording here is too great - the only thing you can really do is see what your DM thinks.
