Skyrim mods

Happily I found out that my computer can run skyrim at it's lowest settings,so that means no texture mods. I have the alternate life alternate start mod, any others i should look at getting?

I highly recommend you get the unoffical patches. There are still a lot of bugs in skyrim and those help.

Also Google for Skyrim Nexus and have fun.

Unofficial patches, as mentioned. I like the mods that add more sounds. But the one I'm really enjoying is companion mod Vilja in Skyrim. I had used the Vilja mod in Oblivion and it was very nice to have her hanging around with me again in Skyrim.

Skyrim is exquisitely awesome!

I don't have all of the relevant Mod names but will list conceptual areas I found very fun to mod and play (all collected on Nexus--you can select from functional areas or groupings of mod types in addition to searching by keywords):

Given space, back up your clean and patched installation beforehand.

Review the "Top" mods based upon popularity and other criteria as a survey.

Look for collections or even "conversions" that combine several compatible mods. [compatibility, load order and so on will be a science and potentially an art depending upon how many mods you combine; luckily there are many examples in the big packs and "total conversions"]

Tools:
  • Skyrim Script Extender (to run awesome "logic"/capability changes in many of the best mods)
  • FOMOD (mod organizer, updater and launcher with settings) [some of these can be chained together so that you launch your mods and the skse in 64-bit mode for instance]
  • Graphics setting tweak tools that can override defaults and crank out greater performance or quality (search for those kind of things--applied to nVidia in my case; tree shadows, further horizon, etc.)
  • Run in 64-bit mode with special setting or executable if you have the architecture and OS to access more memory

Graphics:
  • There are official hi-res texture packs but use may increase the runtime memory required
  • Race, Features (eyes, hair, etc.), Clothing/Armor, Weapon, Magic effect retextures
  • Potion bottle retextures
  • Book retextures
  • Etc (most environment, object and creature textures can be made different [sometimes more interesting?])
  • 3D or other overland map conversions
  • Bright ore veins (so you can spot the numerous mineral types and locations easier)

Play
  • The Vampire and House modules add much to do
  • Numerous fantastic spell additions or conversions--many of which will all work together (in the worst case, you spawn the books or directly add) [look up the console capabilities for all aspects of the game!] [one set lets you summon dozens of creatures including dragons!] [one has spells that level in power (e.g. vertical lightning bolt that can chain and knockdown!)]
  • Make combat more challenging
  • Numerous weapon and armor additions and changes--including the ability to craft
  • Custom cloaks (fun to find the unique ones)
  • Special companions (with quests) (including horses and dogs, etc.)--can have multiple at the same time (though can slow game) [actually, the more you mod the more that has to be checked each "heartbeat"] [Vilja was fun for numerous reasons including: she "talks" with standard companions esp. when you have multiple followers and gets them to say unusual things; special behaviors; special capabilities; special dialogue; neat comments (offer her some of her preferred foods/treats!)]
  • Craft an outdoor tent and campfire usable in the wild (side of mountain, heh)
  • Persistent night vision (toggle)
  • Skill tree minor or major changes (some give you achievement-like changes, or very different combat, stealth and magic capabilities and synergies)
  • GET the monster packs that are highly rated and work together adding many new and varied monsters, ESPECIALLY the deadly, mighty and other DRAGON boosts which make for truly epic combats with numerous unique and vastly empowered dragons
  • Add numerous herbs to find and use (alchemist chests to identify)
  • Improved companion and monster AI
  • Potentially try the Skyproc patcher to give custom feats, items, etc. to all monsters (making them theoretically more challenging, but it can destabilize play)
  • Cap and other tweak mods if you want to tune how much health, mana and endurance per level; feat gain frequency; level caps; variations thereof...
  • Bag of holding (special quest) or other container mods such as one that lets you cast at a container and remember any combination of inventory types which you can take all but esp.--you can auto-store from your carrying inventory in one fell swoop
  • Skill or other tweaks that increase carrying capacity; add an inventory (persistent) to your horse for mobile high-capacity storage
  • Mod that binds quick abilities to standard and special hotkeys; color-codes them; sorts by types such as magic schools, specials (shouts), armor and weapons, etc.
  • New quests and locations
  • ET CETERA!

Have fun!
