Slaine RPG from Mongoose Publishing

Erekose

Eternal Champion
So what do people think of it?

I bought it a few days ago and have just finished a first read through. I'd be interested in hearing what people have to say about:

1. The honour system
2. The new magic system
3. The interpretation of the "warp spasm"
4. The "new" core classes

Tsyr, if you've seen the Judge Dredd RPG from Mongoose Publishing I think you might be surprised at how much more has been altered from the PHB with Slaine, It's much more of a "total conversion".

Where do you live Erekose?

I've ben looking forward to this for quite a while, but my FLGS owner doesn't seem to have it on her radar screen yet.

At least it can't be too far off, I guess :)

Maerdwyn, I'm in the UK (Kings Langley, Hertfordshire) - this must be one of those rare events when the UK gets something before you do in the states!

If there's anything you want to know in advance let me know and I'll post a summary.

It is an impressive conversion although I have misgivings about how the warp spasm has been interpreted . . .

Mongoose is a British firm. :D

What's the concept behind it? I know very little about the game.

Piratecat! Like Judge Dredd, Slaine is a 2000AD comic character. Essentially, it's roleplaying in a pseudo-historical Celtic world. Clan vs clan conflict would most likely form the core of any campaign (although anything is possible). A huge emphasis is placed on personal honour and the power of the druids.

(Think Cuchulainn and you've not a bad picture of Slaine!)

In terms of the D20 book, it is relatively slim but covers a lot of ground (including reinventing the core classes, mass combat and restructuring the magic system).

All of this adds to the "feel" of the Land of the Young. The game captures the feel of the comic strip well and has obviously been written by a true fan.

However, as I've hinted at already there are elements that I'm not completely satisfied with but it's a good start for any DM to build on.

I too, am looking forward to the Slaine rpg. I have read what little I can get in the States of Dredd and Slaine, and I am really impressed by the Judge Dredd rpg. I wonder if any of Simon Bisley's art made it to the Slaine rpg, I haven't seen any in the JD books I have so far. Bisley is really good at bringing on extremes, in Slaine I would hazard to say even moreso than his excellent work on Dredd.

This isn't what I'm getting the book for, but it's nice to know that there's a mass combat system in there - what's it like?
