Slayers D20

Psion

Adventurer
Anyone else have this yet?

It's got a neat magic system which looks to do a fair job of of emulating the "spell-hurling anime fantasy with lots of big explosions" subgenre. Has some other neat tweaks, too. Like reputation as a skill. (And you should see the still they used for the "taunt" skill...)

The only thing that set me aback was the levels of the characters from the series. The PC were in the high teens and 20s, and some NPCs were like 55! I don't know if that's true to the series or not (somehow, I wonder, but not following it, I can't say for sure), but I wouldn't want to play a game were every loudly proclaimed super attack is followed by the clatter 40 or so damage dice... I think if I were to play this, I would make the PCs a bit lower level than the series characters supposedly are.

I'm reading through it right now and so far I like it a lot (despite having never seen the cartoon)

I'm going to crank out a review of it in the next few days.

Yes, seems right considering that one of the characters has a spell that can summon a God that will utterly destroy the universe if they feel like it.

An NPC that encases an entire megapolis in a single giant creature and can create undead type duplicates of anyone inside the crystal.

Thank you for the review. I'm glad you took the time to read over the book and give your opinions, whether or not you were familiar with the source material. I was, of course, especially happy that you liked the book! :D

I do want to note regarding the balancing of attribute modifiers...
Slayers d20 was written to be compatible with standard d20 as well as BESMd20. BESMd20 has pretty specific guidelines on point costs and construction of races and classes, and that's what we used.

Also, Slayers is a high-magic world. Because magic is based on every attribute except strength and dex, all those other attributes gained some importance. Intelligence determines skill points, wisdom gives spell slots to even non-magical characters, and charisma affects psychological warfare. We figured that in Slayers, taking a loss in those areas balanced with high strength pretty well.

Hmm...those are pretty good points. I think I will go cut and paste your explanation into the comments in my review if that is ok.
