[Slightly OT] [RANT] I HATE MOVING!!

Moving. What's so fun about it? Especially when you have a largish RPG collection.

We've been packing to be ready to move next weekend. Boxed all the older supplements and adventures and put them in a room downstairs. Its been raining all this week and was quite heavy last night. Moved some of the boxes today as it wasn't raining and lo and behold some of the boxes were wet as the room downstairs isn't rain-proof!

So 2 boxes that were on the bottom of the piles had soaked bottoms. 1 was full of older Dragon magazines (all the bottoms of them are now water damaged, some even worse) and the other had old 2e FR supplements and modules. Most are ok, only slightly damp, but one is completely waterlogged.

What is even more annoying is that these were going to be in storage for a couple of months and then moved into our first owned home and there they would stay for a number of years without being moved. Now some are damaged and I am really annoyed about it.

Ok think I got it off my chest now. At least I now have more energy to burn to finish up the last of the packing. And this time will make sure nothing goes against the wall that gets wet as we are expecting more rain this week.

Man, that sucks. My wife & I discovered the hard way, though not as hard as yours, that if you plan on storing anything for any significant length of time then it is worth the extra money to get those giant Rubbermaid Storage containers. They hold a lot, they're lightweight when empty, and they're waterproof. I suggest you pick some up.

I love moving. I'm moving next May, to California (Los Angeles, or San Diego). It's so exhilerating to just go, to pack all your stuff up, and go.

But Kerouac dreams aside, I experianced a house fire not too long ago, and totally lost everything. (It pretty much explains my financial plight at the moment.) It's times like this you need to realize the beautiful resources of:

Old Library Sales! Libraries carry Dragon, Dungeon, etc. and every so often they sell old ones. For a buck I got a massive stack of both, it was glorious.

Old Gaming Stores! They sell stuff dirt cheap in bargain bins. Mm. Bargains.

Best of luck, with the move.

I've moved 3 times in the past year...

From Northern Indiana to the far-west 'burbs of Chicago (Last February)...

From there to Norfolk, Va. (last June)...

From there to Manteno (about 1 Hour south of Chicago, just last month)...

All of them work-related moves.

I hate contract work. Doesn't anyone direct-hire anymore?

At any rate, yes, I hate moving. I fortunately didn't suffer the losses you have (although apparently a mouse ate my Arabian Adventure book in storage during my Norfolk stay). I have lost my collection several times for other reasons, though (1 major theft and 2 floods), so I feel your pain.

I know your pain!

I once had to move my chair across the whole room, and that chair was loaded with rpg books! Some books spilled of the top of the pile and I'm afraid they might have gotten serious mental damage, concidering the incredible trauma from the fall. Actually I'm quite concerned about them, because after that fall my PHB has been falling apart, both literally AND physically. I think the latter may be caused by the former, so I'm thinking about taking it, as well as my DMG and FRCS, to get some councelling.

Arthur - lol! That was great!

I haven't had any bad experiences moving but I did lose most of my comic book collection (around 600 issues) to a flood when I lived in a basement apartment. My content insurance wouldn't give me anything for it due to it being caused by a break on the water main on city property. The friends I was renting from felt so badly about it that they bought me about 100 issues of a private collection they found at a garage sale. Ironicly many of the comics I lost were amoung this collection! It still sucked that I lost so many others but at least I had some very understanding & generous friends :D

When you go to counselling, see if you can get the PHB to 'fess up on all the errors and what childhood experience brought that about.

The main thing that jips me about all this is that I bought those magazines and supplements when they were new. They have been in mint condition the whole time I have owned them and now some of them are damaged.

And the owner had stuff in that room before we were allowed to use it and never told us about water leakage.

I think I remember a store that had Pirates of the Fallen Sea (worst affected supplement) secondhand for a good price. Shall go back there and see if they still have it.

I'll second the opinion on Rubbermaid containers. You can get 'em on sale for $3 a WalMart. Worth every penny to store anything in. Plus they can be super easy to carry as they have carry handles built in.... I have my entire Mego collection in them. If you're worried about moisture you can also get large silican gel packets to put in and soak up the moisture (just don't eat them :-) )

Hey, I feel your pain, maransreth!

My husband & I are moving from our 3rd floor apartment and the place is in utter chaos at the moment! It's driving me nuts. We're doing our best to keep our RPG supplies in one area (as we continue to game through the chaos), but our moving date is fast aproaching.

My only solace is found in thinking about our new home. We're building a house, so hopefully this will be the last move we'll have to make!

(Unless of course we are asked to help friends move, which is fine, since they're going to help us...right, guys??) ;)

EDIT: Rubbermaid containers: wonder items to have! I highly suggest them!!

I hate moving also. Mainly due to the fact I am the one who has to move all of my stuff, in tons of boxes and somehow I usually end up moving during the summer months.
