Slimes, A Monstrous PC Race

I tend to like the monstrous races more than the tradition ones, so here's my take on a PC ooze race. I'd be delighted to hear any thoughts, concerns, or constructive criticisms you may have.

Edit: Okay, the whole pasting thing isn't working so well. I think I've cleaned up all the issues. For those who still cannot see the race, here's a link to my posting of the race on the WotC forums.

Second Edit: changed the way the acidic coating of the Corrosive subrace works. Instead of adding 1d6 acid damage to attacks, it now increases the slime's minimum unarmed strike value and adds the acid type to the damage.

Oozing Blobs
Slimes are ageless amorphous blobs of transparent ooze. Although they are typically only a single color, slimes can be found in a rainbow of colors and variety of tones. Mysterious creatures, slimes are also capable of taking on a humanoid appearance; in this form they stand roughly four to six feet tall and range in build from slight to thick.
A slime's humanoid form can appear to be smooth and genderless or it can appear as if it were a specific gender; it can appear bald, or it can appear to have a styled blob of hair; it can appear dressed, or in the buff. Although a slime can take on humanoid form, it remains semi-transparent and cannot be readily mistaken for a normal humanoid.

Like Water
Slimes are curious. Their bodies are physically alien to the reckoning of most humanoids, whose solid forms and unique parts are especially bizarre to slimes; they use their fluid nature to creep into places unseen and to explore places inaccessible to solid beings; and they are often curious about the domains of other races, creeping into them through the sewers and dining on pest creatures and organic refuse.

Unseen Depths
Whether it's the bottoms of stagnant marshes or caverns buried deep beneath the earth, slimes dwell in damp places that never see the light of the sun; slimes are not harmed or hindered by sunlight but prefer to live in darkness, using it as shelter against enemies and cover while stalking prey. Although they can assume a humanoid form, slimes typically spend much of their lives as blobs of colored ooze that dissolve and digest plants, bugs, and (occasionally) larger creatures, whom they regard as a rare feast.
Slimes are social creatures capable of communicating everything to other slimes by touch. Whenever several slimes gather they will see to touch each other or to commingle into a single puddle of ooze, allowing every slime who participates to come away with the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of the others. The slime remains an individual with its own will, but the influx of new thoughts, feelings, and experiences may cause a slime to undergo some personality changes; these changes can be minor or major, and they can last a short or long time.
When separated from others of their kind, slimes will seek out other creatures. Because slimes typically communicate with other slimes by a touch, a lonely slime who is unfamiliar with other creatures may attempt to touch one only for that creature to be burned by the slime's acid (which the creature may well see as an attack).
Slimes in other lands often make their homes in the sewers and refuse pits of those lands. By eating pest creatures and organic garbage, slimes can easily develop a symbiotic relationship with a settlement. Because they typically remain in ooze form and prefer to avoid the sun, the existence of humanoid slimes is typically regarded as urban myth by most of the solid races.

Reasons for Adventuring
Slimes frequently adventure to sate their curiosity about other races and to find other slime colonies. However, slimes may also abandon the sedentary life of the colony if the colony is driven from its home, perhaps by humanoid adventurers, or natural disasters such as earthquakes and lava flows.

Am I Hungry
Slimes see all organic material as a potential meal, but they know to be wary of the "solid" races if for no other reason than their master of fire (which is particularly harmful to slimes). Although slimes see other creatures as food, slimes are not perpetually hungry, and a well-fed slime can peacefully coexist with other races. . . if the other races are willing to let them do so.
Other Races: Sentient humanoid slimes are often regarded as creatures of myth by the other races, whose perception of ooze creatures may be colored by the more well known oozes and the demon lord Juiblex. Most members of the solid races will see slimes as potentially dangerous even without seeing them in humanoid form. A slime in humanoid form is likely to be regarded as a dangerous monster, which could be accurate if it's hungry.

Variant: Gooey Allies

The above description takes a realistic view of how humanoids would react to flesh-eating blob people stepping out of urban legend and walking among them. however, the fantasy worlds of D&D are full of beings that real people would consider monstrous, and in some games, Dragonborn, Tieflings, Orcs, and various other races are merely regarded with caution and/or suspicion instead of hate and fear. In games where such races are allowed to openly walk the streets most cities, slimes may be treated differently than presented above. Also, if the DM decides that gelatinous slimes are the only subrace that exists, slimes become far less monstrous and much more able to blend in with other civilizations.
The following presents one potential model for the interaction of slimes and other races that does not involve them being regarded as dangerous monsters.
Other Races: Slimes who live with other races typically dwell in dumps and sewers, devouring pests, organic trash, and the occasional stray animal. In smaller settlements that often lack sewers and dumps, slimes are seen as creatures of myth: it is likely that no one has ever seen one, and searching for one is likely to be fruitless. In larger settlements, most people have never seen a slime (dumps and sewers aren't particularly well-traveled), but they accept that slimes live among them and that they can be found if you go looking for them. Some teenage children dare others to enter the dumps or sewers and bring back proof that they met a slime as a test of courage.
If both corrosive and gelatinous slimes exist, most people who see slimes will give them a wide berth simply for safety's sake, although they will often watch the slime curiously as long as it's within view. The knowledge of the corrosive slimes' acidic nature means that people and shopkeepers will often try to shoo slimes away from their building for fear of damage to the premises and/or merchandise. However, once a gelatinous slime has proven that it is not harmful, most shopkeepers will allow them to enter, but they will likely watch the slime carefully.

Slime Traits
Your slime character has several natural abilities stemming from untold ages of bacteriological evolution.
Ability Score Increase. Your constitution score increases by 2, and you may increase either your Strength or your Dexterity score by 1.
Age. Slimes are born through organic fission, and a slime is an adult from the moment it splits from its parent. They have no known end to their lifespan.
Size. Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is dependent upon your current form: humanoid or amorphous blob. As a humanoid, your base walking speed is 30 feet. As a blob, your base "walking" speed is 20 feet; however, as a blob you also have a climb speed of 20 feet.
Darkvision. Accustomed to living in lightless cavers and beneath scum-covered swamp waters, you can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. Beyond the limits of your darkvision, you have normal sight.
Living Ooze. You need to eat and drink, but you do not need to sleep or breathe. You are capable of moving through openings as narrow as one inch wide without squeezing. You also have a liquid volume of 14.25 gallons and can fit in any container that can hold at least that much liquid. If you squeeze into the container, you can condense yourself to half that volume. However, squeezing into a container is uncomfortable and requires a moment to readjust after leaving the container. For one round after leaving a container that you squeezed into, you suffer disadvantage on initiative checks.
Humanoid Form. Although you are an amorphous blob, you can assume and maintain a humanoid form. While humanoid in shape, this form is obviously composed of largely transparent ooze. Your humanoid form can appear to take on humanoid attributes, such as hair and gender as you will it. Maintaining humanoid form requires some effort on your part; if you do not revert to blob form for at least six hours per day you gain a level of exhaustion. Assuming humanoid form requires you to spend an action; however, given your liquid nature, you may don all of your armor, weapons, and equipment that you are touching as part of taking on humanoid form. You can drop back into blob form as either a reaction or as part of your movement.
Alchemical Healing. You do not have bones, muscles, and organs like solid creatures do. Consequently, you get no benefit from the application of a healer's kit. Instead, you can gain the same benefit from the application of alchemist's supplies, provided the one treating you is proficient with them.
Creeping. While in blob form, you typically move by gliding across surfaces such as floors, walls, and ceilings. This movement is fluid and almost entirely silent, granting you advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) check to move without being heard.
Absorption. You absorb liquids through the membrane that makes up your "skin." Any poison that is delivered by ingestion is effective on contact with you, and any potions that make contact with your skin are automatically consumed by you (whether you want to or not).
Elemental Vulnerability. As a living blob, you are particularly vulnerable to heat and cold. Fire deals twice the normal amount of damage to you. Additionally, whenever you take cold damage your speed is reduced by 10 feet until the end of your next turn. The slowing effect of cold damage is an additional effect to whatever caused the cold damage; if the effect that deals cold damage to you also says that it reduces your speed (such as Ray of Frost), you suffer the greater of the two speed penalties.
Digestive Acid. Your body contains digestive acids that dissolve organic matter so you can digest it. Anything organic that passes through the membrane that is your skin takes 1d6 acid damage each round it remains inside you.
Engulf. When you are grappling an enemy or are grappled by an enemy that is no more than one size larger than you, as an action you may attempt a Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check to engulf that enemy; this check is opposed by the target's Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check. An enemy that is engulfed takes 1d6 acid damage each round, this damage increases by 1d6 when you reach 5th level (2d6), 11th level (3d6), and 17th level (4d6).
When you engulf an enemy, you have made yourself into a thick film of slime that covers the enemy's entire body. Consequently, you drop all of your weapons, armor, and equipment where you stand when you attempt to engulf an enemy. You may cease engulfing an enemy at any time, no action required.
Each round that you wish to keep an enemy engulfed, you must spend an action. Additionally, you must forgo your movement: you move with the creature that you have engulfed. If you are attacked while have engulfed an enemy, you take half damage from the attack and the engulfed enemy takes the other half.
Each round, on its turn, a creature that is engulfed can attempt a Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check opposed by your Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check to escape.
Acid Immunity. You are immune to acid damage dealt by ooze creatures, and resistant to acid damage from all other sources.
Languages. Slimes primarily communicate with each other chemically, which requires physical contact. However, they are capable of learning to speak, read, and write other languages. You know both Burbl, the language of slimes (see below), and Common.
Subraces. There are two distinct races of slimes: corrosive slimes, and gelatinous slimes. Choose one of these two subraces.

Corrosive
Corrosive slimes are the more monstrous type of slimes. Their acidic touch makes them dangerous to anyone who would come into physical contact with them, and this makes it difficult for them to get along with the solid races. Although corrosive slimes are transparent, their coloration is more vivid, preventing them from hiding as easily as their paler, gelatinous kin.
Acidic. Your body is coated with the same digestive acid that it contains. When you grapple and enemy or are grappled by an enemy you deal 1d6 acid damage to that enemy. Also, your unarmed strike deals 1d6 damage, this damage is both acid and bludgeoning. If your unarmed strike's damage is set by another feature (for example as part of the monk class) use the greater of the two damage expressions. Furthermore, you are capable of coating a melee weapon with your acid; this takes one action and for one minute the weapon's damage counts as acid damage in addition to its normal damage type.

Gelatinous
Gelatinous slimes are acidic only on the inside; this makes them less dangerous to others, and it creates the perception that they are the less monstrous type of slime. Gelatinous slimes share the same range of colors that other slimes have, but their coloration is very weak, and it's incredibly easy to see right through them.
Transparent. Your body is so transparent that you are able to easily conceal yourself. You may attempt to hide when you are only lightly obscured.



Slime Racial Theme:

What is a racial theme?

Theme is the name that I have chosen to use for a mechanic that allows one to substitute mechanics at the earliest levels of play. For example, the theme below substitutes natural armor and attacks for the weapon and armor proficiencies that would otherwise be granted by whatever class you chose. Other themes could (for example) place daily limits on your cantrip use in exchange for granting more spell slots, or could allow you to turn elementals instead of undead.

Naked Ooze
Requirement: Must have slime as your character race.
A naked ooze is a slime that most closely resembles typical ooze monsters. Perhaps you are less evolved than the rest of your kin, or maybe you are more in touch with your own monstrous ancestors. Either way, as a naked ooze you prefer to rely on your natural weapons and defenses over the tools typically used by the solid races.
Unarmored Defense. You cannot gain proficiency with any armor or shield. While unarmored and not using a shield you have an Armor Class equal to 10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Constitution modifier.
Unarmed Attack. Your unarmed strikes deal 1d8 bludgeoning damage instead of the usual 1 bludgeoning damage. You are proficient with your unarmed strikes, but you cannot gain proficiency with any other melee weapon.
Acid Glob. You can hurl globs of acid. These globs do 1d6 acid damage and have a range of 30/120. You are considered proficient when attacking with these globs, but you cannot gain proficiency with any other ranged weapons.

Burbl
Slimes speak by creating various bubbling and gurgling noises accompanied by breathy sounds of air escaping and glottal stops, which divide and accentuate during speech. This language is called "burbl," which is the burblish word for "talk." Burbl is a syllabic language, and most of the characters of the burbl alphabet represent both a consonant and a vowel sound that are said together, such as "Gu" and "Plo." However, some letter represent single consonants (like the single letters of B, P, G, & R), some of which have special rules (an R can only occur before a B, P, or G); a consonant followed by an "L," or by an "L" and a vowel (Like PL and PLo); a consonantal dipthong (such as Shh and Thh); an unvoiced long consonant sound (like Sss, Fff, and Pthh); a glottal stop (as seen in the pause in the English term "uh-oh"); and the fart-like raspberry sound (which is used as an intensifier like the English exclamation mark or the Japanese sentence ending "-yo").
Burbl is considered an exotic language for any creature that is not a slime, an ooze, or composed of fluid (like water elementals).

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully I have been able to clear up all the issues.

1. I don't know what a "racial theme" is. Is it like a racial variant? It sounds like it's distinct from sub-races, and if you can mix-and-match, then a Corrosive Naked Ooze might be on the over-powered side. It also feels like it would interact strangely with the Monk class.

2. You say that they don't need to sleep, but that they also must revert to amorphous during a long rest. As far as I know, there's no reason to ever take a long rest, unless you need to recover Hit Dice or spells or something. That also interacts strangely with the Healing dial, especially if you crank it up to "long rest = 1 hour".

3. The Engulf ability seems clunky, but I'm not sure how to fix it. I feel like the race would be balanced, even if that ability was restricted to Naked Ooze variants, and it would cause far fewer issues in that case.

I think you are correct about the long rest, I'll change that from per long rest to per day.

With regard to the racial theme, I should have spelled out what that is more clearly. I will go back and do that. Before I do, let me tell you what it is.

A while ago I noticed that there really wasn't a mechanic in 5e for altering the beginning mechanics of a class. For example, if you wanted to replace a wizard's arcane recovery ability with something else. I have decided to create a group of mechanics that I am calling themes (since D&D is no longer using that term for 5e), which modify or replace things to create a specific feel. The Naked Ooze theme fits in with that mold, because it substitutes equivalent things for class features such as armor and weapon profs. And, naturally, I call it a racial theme because it only fits with the slime race, and is intended to evoke a feel of being more like a monstrous ooze creature.

If you have a better suggestion on what to call it, I am not wedded to the name theme.
