Slings

In Basic D&D, it was 1d4.

In 1E and 2E, it was 1d4+1/1d6+1 (medium & smaller / large and bigger).

In 3E, it dropped back to 1d4, probably because they rounded off all weapons that did "dice + adds" for damages (a la hammers, broadswords, etc.)

And d4+1 is average 3.5 damage. d6 for a 1e bow is also 3.5 average damage.

How about "Mighty" slings instead?

:)

If slings were just changed to thrown weapons, you wouldn't need the "mighty" signifier. You would get your str bonus. To counterbalance this significant (at higher levels) advantage, I would perhaps make them exotic weapons to reflect the training required of a skilled user.

I was pondering making a sling-weilding rapid-shot rogue not too long ago.

Either that or thowing axes, or something more original than bows. Problem with slings is - at least from a numbers standpoint... there's not much justification to using them.... unless you can't get a bow proficiency.

wrong.

slings are free. both cost and weight wise.

i carry infinite slings.:D

and pickup stones when i need them.

Skulls fractured by sling bullets are one of the distinctive and relatively common characteristics of classical battlefields.

I really don't know how they matched up against bows and arrows aside from the material advantages. The pre-medieval bows tended to be far weaker than their later equivalents, there's a lot of art and tech that goes into making a good bow. Plus I understand that bows and arrows were pretty easy to counter even with mediocre armor whereas I can imagine that a huge hunk or rock or lead hitting you at high speeds from a high angle is clost to just as effective no matter what type of armor your wearing-till you hit good plate armor, damn tanks.

slings vs arrows

I hope this turns out right its my first post so if it looks weird sorry.

Arrows could and often did go through substantial armor. The sharp point where the focus of force was could cut through quite resilient objects. Even the primitive bow could still accomplish this quite well though no where near as well as the longbow did in later times.

In fact we made bow much harder to use but added this bonus in our game. Our game used a damage protection system for armor so it was pretty easy to add in a penetration damage die but I digress.

The bow was a powerful weapon needing much training to be used on an individual level. Though most archers just fired into an area as a mass of archers during battles.

My understanding of how the sling was used was fairly similar it didn't go as far. (though with the staff sling this could be improved upon as well)

Just my thoughts on the discussion.

I like the 'heavy sling' idea.

And perhaps the sling prestige class in Races of Faerun will make the sling a viable weapon? Kina like what the Lasher did for the whip?

After all, one of the possible functions of a PrC is to take a weak choice and make it as good as if you had made a different choice, ne?

I *really* like the exotic sling..*yoinkies*

One advantage of slings is that they're excellent for guerilla troops. A missile weapon is better than a melee weapon for hit-and-run attacks, and better than a thrown weapon in that you're not throwing away your weapon! Slings are trivial to make, and their ammunition is almost trivial.

Sling ammunition, at 1sp, requires just 3cp in materials, and even a novice (+1 skill check) can make a whole bagful in a day. There's just no way to keep people from being able to arm themselves with slings.

Another advantage to slings is concealability. You can stick a couple of bullets in your money-pouch, tuck the sling inside your jacket, and just pull them out when you get within that magical thirty foot radius for your sneak attack.

Being a simple weapon, I've put "sling" on the equipment list of many a charater, simply because they're free... and never regretted it. Excellent backup weapon.

Anybody seen a modern lacrosse stick? It's a hockey stick with a small "net" at the end of it. I can see them as perfect for throwing round-shaped grenade weapons and such...hmmmm.

No, it's not really a staff sling either. Those things wouldn't have any real range.

Wait'll my players see my new and improved kobold field troops :D

For most intents & purposes, the lacrosse stick works on the "Spear Thrower" principle. You're just using a shorter missle and a longer thrower. :)
