No, it's not really a staff sling either. Those things wouldn't have any real range.

Half a pound? As I understand it, a lead sling bullet was only, say, an inch by an inch and a half, oblong (a bit like a football), and maybe 50 to 75 grams. (One pound is ~450 g.)Drawing from memory of some research I did awhile back, a typical military sling stone weighed in around half a pound.
