Slowing Down

interwyrm

First Post
Whenever I GM, the scenarios that I have planned out seem to last maybe a fourth of the time they are supposed to. The reason for this is that I don't go into detail, I gloss over things, and I keep pushing the players to move on. Then they get past the point I have prepared to, and I am forced to run things off the cuff, which speeds me up even more. How do I slow down?

Go into more detail, don't gloss things over, and let the players set some of the pace. Don't push them to move on unless they get bogged down in something pointless, like playing out every detail of a shopping trip, for example. But if they really want to play out every detail of something like that, let them. They'll probably be happier players. It's much easier to break something up into multiple sessions because the action took too long than it is to try to wing it because you rushed through the script, IMHO. :)

Definitely let your player's decide when to move on without pressure from you. That's part of the game, trying to make decisions as to how to proceed at a given passage or option. If you are lucky you will have some highly interactive times just from allowing these moments to happen.

As for the details, having some on hand will help. Jot them down. You don't have to write paragraphs and paragraphs, just a few notes to jog your head when you start describing something to folks. Having them jotted down will help you remember what you wanted to say about the room and should help keep you from glossing over the details along the way.
