Small, cuddly, and explosive (comments appreciated)

This is a creature design that I've started using in my games, something to throw adventurers off from the standard clash of monster and hero. I'm not sure what the challenge rating should be on this, and I'd appreciate any comments.

PoePoe
Tiny Magical Beast
Hit Dice: 1d4+1 (3hp)
Initiative: +2 (Dex)
Speed: 30ft.
AC: 14 (+2 Size, +2 Dex)
Attacks: None
Damage: None
Face/Reach: 2.5ft. by 2.5ft./0ft.
Special Attacks: Unstable Chemistry
Saves: Fort +1, Ref +2, Will +2

PoePoes are small furry creatures, much like gerbils or hamsters that can be found in peaceful wooded areas. The poepoe community is usually a number of burrow mounds that lead to underground sleeping and nesting chambers. Poepoes will forage individually for food in the surrounding area and bring back to the community. They are known for their highly explosive nature, and entire communities of them have been wiped out by unstable chemistry chain reaction effects in their burrows. This would normally destroy the species except that at any given time 25% of the population is either foraging or scouting, and upon returning to a ruined community will seek safer places to start over. A sign of a poepoe is a sign that an area is free of constant danger. Some extravagant and very brave people manage to lure these creatures into becoming pets, although the dangers of having one of these creatures close by is obvious.

Quick Breeding: Poepoes are amazingly quick breeders, replenishing most losses to their population in a few days.

Nature Sense (Ex): These creatures have an uncanny sense of their environ and will immediately stop breeding before taxing their surroundings of food and space sources. Any poepoe can assess the surrounding populace and food sources given an hour's worth of scouting.

Passive: Poepoes refuse to fight in any circumstance. In fact, any time that a poepoe realizes that a fight is going to take place, they react with their unstable cemistry ability (see below).

Unstable Chemistry (Ex): Poepoes have a highly unstable body chemistry and whenever surprised, frightened, or disturbed an adrenaline rush occurs that reacts violenty with the other chemicals in their bodies. Whenever a poepoe enters a fight or flight response state they immediately explode dealing 6d6 damage (Reflex save for half) to all within a 15 ft. radius. Killing a poepoe without causing an unstable chemistry reaction requires enough damage to be dealt to the creature in one blow to drop the creature below -10 hp (and this damage must be dealt to the creature without the creature realizing what is going on). The trigger for the unstable chemistry reaction is whenever the poepoe determines that it is in trouble. Unstable chemistry is a free action.

Skills: Poepoes gain a +4 racial bonus to Listen checks.

I'd allow them to flee, but state that if cornered, trapped, etc. -- basically, forced to choose "fight" instead of "flight" -- that they then explode.

I did consider making this a situation where the creature only exploded when cornered, but thought that would give too much control to the creature over that ability. Currently I'm using the little guys as random summons on a cursed weapon being carried by one of the members in my gaming group. I'm sure anyone can imagine what would happen when one of these guys gets dropped in the middle of a combat situation without explanation.

"captain, the tribbles are taking over the ship"
"no spock, these are poepoes...a very dangerous aaaaaaaaaaaa"

I like the idea, but what level summon monster spell would it require to summon a celestail poepoe?

What benefit is there in having a PoePoe for a pet?

What do they eat?

If someone happens to incapacitate or kill one without it exploding, can any beneficial substances be extracted?

It sounds like a fun idea. I would kill the 'double per day' breeding. Just sounds too hokey. Just give them 'fast breeding' and let it be done with.

I've edited the main post to reflect this.
