Small Publishers on RPGNow

With respect, Morrus, this simply isn't news yet. It's not news until it's officially rolled out. Right now, it's rumor. Rumor which can damage quite a few businesses.

Please reconsider.

I appreciate your point of view, Gareth. I even sympathise with it. But I'm afraid that that's not something I'm prepared to do. As fair warning, this'll be hitting the news page, too (although I'll mention that it's a plan being discussed, not something that has happened).

If RPGNow is concerned that the huge volume of "Indy" publishers is hurting their business by drowning out the top-sellers, then it would seem better to "front-list" said big sellers by a weighting scheme based on sales, rather than creating an artificial split which in my opinion would hurt the site. I know I personally am not interested in the 400 new items that pop up every time I go there, but I'd like to be able to search through them all at the same time, in case there's a topic that I need game coverage on (say, stats for small ships, d20 stats for 101 different strains of Syphilis, or what have you. ) Having them as effectively two sites would hamper its usefulness to me.

Don't worry. From the discussions it is clear that exceptions are being made so that the high-quality publishers stay on RPGNow regardless of sales.

Isn't that going to be a bit insultive though? These people we feel are doing good work, so we let them stay, you other guys who frankly aren't dfoing good work we are going to move you to another site since you get in the way of the people who make us money.

Or it could be viewed as a positive- as in "now you don't have to compete with Green Ronin or Wizards of the Coast for attention on the front page".

Really, people are getting unnecessarily upset about this move. The real potential winners in this scenario are those being moved to the indy site imo.

Not really, RPGNow is a well known imprint. RPGIndiesNow would not be (Or whatever other name they choose)

But from what Phil Reed said that I quoted, quality publishers get to stay. So, it doesn't seem to matter what the sales were like just if whomever happens to think you do quality work. So, the main site is where all the people who do good work is, the other site is for the others.

Im not privy to any of the discussions or decisions involved. But there have been quality standards in place at RPGNow for awhile. They've just never been enforced.

All I'm saying is, you get moved to a different site where you actually have the chance to BE one of the vendors featured on the front page like the platinum vendors at RPGNow are. It doesnt sound like the end of the world to me.

In fact it sounds like an opportunity.

To Wystan: Im sure the new site will get plenty of attention, banner space and linkage from the main RPGNow site. Its not like they're being shuffled off to the back endcap at Walmart.

Your questions will be answered when we're ready to announce publicly. We're so busy hammering out the details that we really can't spare the time right now to monitor this thread.

We really don't want it spiral out of control, with half-truths, assumptions, etc. forming the basis for most of the discussion. When we're ready, we'll announce, and then we can talk about it.
