One of them finally said "Man, we sound like a Cheech and Chong movie... a BAD Cheech and Chong movie."

DM: Where's the miniature of your character?
PC 1: I got it right here in my pocket, man. (Sticks hand in pocket, digs around) I know it's in here somewhere, man. . . . Oh, there it is. . . . No, that's my d*ck. . . OK, here it is (pulls out a lint-caked 15mm halfling figure).
PC 2: Jeez, man, I hope your d*ck's bigger than that.
PC 1: HEY, MAN!
(Rest of group and DM burst out laughing)

Sorry, I couldn't resist. That scene always cracks me up. :D

G'day

In my campaign characters usually smoke bhang. Opium is too incapacitating, coca is customarily chewed, and tobacco is considered lower-class.

But then, my setting is not quasi-European.

Tolkien also had corn in his world.

In the British dialect in which Tolkien wrote, "corn" means "grain". He was probably referring to wheat or perhaps barley.

In many standard translations of Caesar, Latin 'granum' is represented by English 'corn'. Also, you may recall in the KJV Bible Ruth "in tears amid the alien corn". That is not an anachronism, it is British English.

As someone who is allergic to tobacco smoke, I must say I would penalise someone who smokes in-game.
That said, it's part of the genre to have pipe-smoking wizards. It's never come up in any game I played or DM-ed, though.

erm... Does this help?
THE VERY SECRET DIARY OF GANDALF THE GREY
-Day Two:
Bilbo's Birthday party improved by substantial amount of hobbit weed. Everyone sho nice. Bilbo nice too. Lights sho pretty. Frodo not bad either. Hobbits sho cuddly. Whups. Fellover.
-Day Three:
Massive fecking hangover. Off to Minas Tirith for some aspirin.

:D
