Smuggled photos

I think I just had a nerdgasm.

Seriously, sweet looking books. But then I'm happy to sacrifice some content for the ability to read the text without it occasionally burring into a homogeneous mass.

I think the idea for the old feux tome elements was good. Execution was lacking. The DaVinci sketches were ok but the rest was seriously lacking. These look crisp, new, modern and frankly not as cheap. These aren't books I'd be embarrassed to present to someone as an example of design.

The art looks much more dynamic. I don't think it's the colours so much that turned me off in 3E or any lack of skill (Lockwood rocks) but it's all very static, even when it's trying to convey movement and action. This art says "We're here to kick ass and chew bubblegum. And we're all out of bubble gum."

On the other hand, maybe that's because they used all their bubble gum making their clothing... ok, it's a little cartoony, but then if you want to compete with WoW appeal (which defines Cartoony) then you've gotta do what you gotta do. Not bad, though. I prefer darker elements but that's just me.

My hype, though fell back into the Underdark when I read some of that fluff text. The proliferation of silly similies are really starting to annoy me. I mean 'A burst of light, like purity and justice'?!? There's so much wrong with that I don't know where to even BEGIN. Hand me a barf bag, please!

Oh, and: "I'll get the one in the back. That's one hobgoblin who'll regret ever lifting a bow."

Yup. The gay ranger jokes are, like a landslide, bearing down upon me with tedious inevitability. :D

As far as we know those particular magic weapons are the ones that glow. In the dragon picture one of them is not glowing.

Keep your panties on.

The artwork isn't to my tastes at all. I far preferred the red 2nd and 3rd Ed. style the best. This is kind of anime, which is fine for anime or an anime-based game, but just doesn't appeal to me for D&D. I like my D&D games dark and grim - but I guess you can't appeal to everyone all of the time.

Can you point me to an anime where the art style even closely resembles this?

I've been an anime fan for all of my adult life, and I do not see the resemblance whatsoever.

You can't write in the margins if there isn't any whitespace. This is an improvement over 3e where the border was too colored for me to read my notes.

Write (twitch) in (glork) books? (gasp)

HERETIC!

As to why I label all of WotC as glowing item lovers... well, I remember seeing a DnD Insider preview video where the WotC rep was talking about how you would make your weapons in the character builder glow with a strength equal to their +x enhancement bonus. Hence, me thinking they really want all magic to glow.
Magic weapons already glow. And not just a little bit. It has always been this way.

Light Generation

Fully 30% of magic weapons shed light equivalent to a light spell (bright light in a 20-foot radius, shadowy light in a 40-foot radius). These glowing weapons are quite obviously magical. Such a weapon can’t be concealed when drawn, nor can its light be shut off. Some of the specific weapons detailed below always or never glow, as defined in their descriptions.
I can see wanting to change it, but this is hardly something new.

Oft forgotten rule. Like the one that a person wearing both a ring of protection and any other protective item (armor, amulet of natural armor) is constantly surrounded by a faint distortion of the air.

30% of them glow. I have the feeling that more than 30% of the 4E art weapons glow. But what really bothers me, is that they all have the same basic glow effect.

Some variety would be nice (besides colour).

Cheers, LT.
