[/snarky mode on] New Character Closeup

Gary Gygax mentioned in the latest "Q&A with Gary" thread that his group usually used the 4d6 (drop lowest) method.

So there's certainly precedent for pre-FR characters with high ability scores. :)

Yeah. How, uh, dreadfully.... overpowered?

Sorry. Just not seeing it.

I see absolutely no problem in challenging a character like this with bog standard encounters.

My wife, a novice DM, had absolutely no problem mulching characters like this.

Heh, does anyone other than my group actually play 25-point buy characters? It is, supposedly, the "norm," which is why we play it.

I do.

My players complain a bit, but I've noticed it keeps the party together. 25 points keeps 'em scared. I like 'em scared!

I've toyed with the option of allowing them to have 30 points and then increasing the monsters F/R/W saves by +1 to achieve a sort of parity. That way the party has access to more cool abilities but the monsters get a boost as well.

I think the "norm" is probably 4d6, drop lowest...

Yes, point buy is an option in the DMG. I don't know anyone who uses it IRL, though lots of people online sure seem to like it. I could never roll up a character without "rolling up" a character, it just wouldn't feel right.

Someone explain her high stats to me?

Really, it is not necessary to artificially bump up an opponent's stats like that ... not without a good reason to do so.

Can someone tell me the point-buy for Caladnei (a 3e character in FRCS)? *Sigh*

PS my campaign uses point buy.

BiggusGeekus, for the record, your Greatest American Hero icon brings back loads of happy memories...I used to watch that show as often as possible as a child. My mother made me take piano lessons, and she bought me the sheet music of the show's original song to practice on. I still remember the words:

Look at what happened to me,
I can't believe it myself,
Suddenly I'm up on top of the world,
Why couldn't it have been somebody else?

Believe it or not
I'm walking on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flying away
On a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?

Believe it or not,
It's just me.

That song and that show is one of the few things from my childhood I remember with fondness. It was a delight when you started using that icon, I'd forgotten. :)

In Olgar Shiverstone's FR campaign we use 25-point buy.

My other campaign, which is a semi-regular home brew, uses 28-point buy.
