sneak attack and rays

Would you allow sneak attack damage with rays?

We have a player in our group who is asking.

Our GM came and asked me because I tend to be a competent rules lawyer.

My gut reaction and logical thinking says no, but I'd like to get a response from the group and feel a tad bit more comfortable with my response.

Any spell that (1) causes damage and (2) has to hit by an attack roll (rays, touch attacks) can cause a critical hit and, therefore, be used for sneak attacks.

Ok then, I guess for a ray it would still have to be in the 30 foot range limitation, correct?

Yes, within 30 feet. Check out Tome and Blood on page 79. It has a section for crits and sneak attacks with spells.
