Sneak Attack Question

The fact that a rogue gets his sneak attack when flanking is the single thing to make rogues not completely useless in combat. Hiding or feigning just takes to long, and it really isn't that overpowered

The rogue in my party does very well but we have a fighter duelest with a high dex and alot of ranks in tumble (which he hit with very little power but is hard to hit go mobility) which he flanks the creatures for the rogue. I guess it is up to the rest of your party to help the thief to get the flanking oppertunities

Don't worry.

At your level, you will start seeing more opponents that can penetrate invisibility and/or have multiple attacks per round.

It can get really ugly if the Rogue assumes the target can't see him and he is wrong.

A powerful creature could opt to grapple or have Improved Grapple. 50% miss chance is not that big a deal if the creature is sure what square the fairy is. With lower HPs from being a Rogue and lower level due to ECL, plus smaller size, the Rogue can be quickly choked to unconscious, or worse...

The rogue died twice in the last three session. His main problem is that he is obsessed with sneak attack. He says he is useless if he can't make a sneak attack.

He has +6D6 sneak attack. Woopdeedoo. That's not a reason to squat in the face of a fighter!

If I remember right, fairies are tiny (the size category, I already know they are small in size ), which means they don't really have an area they threaten. It should be easy to run away from the fairy rogue without suffering an AoO (because he's out of reach).

So its a great advantage with some disadvantages. (Like you could disarm him without drawing an AoO...and I imagine you'll likely have a significant weapon size advantage.)

Anyway, just some ideas to make your fairy rogue think twice about going in for the SA when his/her dagger keeps getting swatted out of his/her hands!

Its not too powerful when you consider thats all rogues really get. They get good skills sure, but bad hps and average combat ability usually means they need sneak attacks to be worth anything at higher levels other than opening doors and chests.
I'm glad rogues one of the better classes these days. I remeber when making a pure thief made people laugh. At level 20 you couldn't do anything worth noting (save on that day once a year when you got to backstab something and do good for a round).
Rogues are deadly if they flank you. If not, they are toast against any other class one-on-one.

Er, why would point blank a Fireball to kill a rogue? Evasion would make it hurt my group more then him, I would think.

A fireball at ground zero should solve that problem.

Well. Example from my party.

Character: Elf (dex 20), multiclassed rogue2/bard2... which means an effective Refl save +11. Against a lvl 6 sorcerer with Spell Focus evocation (Only corerule books till now).

The DC for the save would be 19 or higher assuming a Cha of 18. Means the rogue or whatever saves with a 9 or higher. I wouldn't bet my live on it.

One good hit could take you nearly out and burning clothes wouldn't help your invisibility...

Consider this for a lvl4 rogue... With a puny +9 to reflex saves...

My own lvl6 char had been fired several times with fireballs or lightning bolts (cast at lvl10). Sure he got evasion. But the fighter without evasion did better... Those extra hitpoints are more important, evasion is something that may save your day but don't rely on it.

Yep. And a fairy with a positive ECL has even less hit points to waste.
