Re: Re: Yes
If the Bard in Dnd was like the EQ bard, you'd probably see more people playing them. It's basicly the 2e bard with a different spell list that makes more sense (my brother, when DMing, used to freak when bards wanted to learn fireball), very similar performance powers - that have new higher level variants so the class scales better, and a more quantified bardic knowledge. Except for the change in the spell list, it's almost the same. An EQ style bard, with good songs instead of spells (key word being GOOD songs), would be much superior to the PHB one, IMHO. Well, only if they took out the carpal tunnel syndrome.
I'd like to think that the value of items was assigned to keep non magic using classesabout even with magic using classes at most levels. I noticed that, in 2e, magic users started to out strip mundane characters after a reaching certain level. At 9th to 10th level, I've played a wizard through an epic battle and not taken a scratch. I've seen 2 wizards surronded by giants that could deliver a hurting to the fighters and not be in any immediate danger. Let's face it, a spell caster could almost always own a fighter. About the only chance the fighter has would be to use some supplemental magic trick to allow him to engage the wizard. Having plenty of magic items at higher levels allows him to stand a chance.
Also, in my experience, the average wealth values tend to actually lower the number of magic items at lower level. In my experience at least, going from 1st to second level usually got you one or two +1 thingies for the group. Now it gets you some alchemist's fire and masterwork stuff.

Long post thereA good read, you seem to point out exactly the things I have been thinking for the past few weeks. Forgotten Realms is very weird now, the population is ridicolous.
I agree with the CRPG thing, it seems like wizards tried hard to get younger gamers into the hobby so they could make a quick buck. If any of you have been playing for example Everquest you should know that the BARD and his new abilities/spells is VERY VERY similar. Nevertheless the new system is good. But they should REALLY tone done the magic items etc...
