So how did kobolds go from being dog-men to having dragon blood?

Ahhh, Dekkin, one of the best npc:s/henchies ever created.
He´s a terrible bard that winds up in Waterdeep during bad times when strange things starts to happen in Halasters Undermountain...
He arrives about the same time as you, when you arrive to the realms after a long sojourn on the Plane of Shadows.
I´m talking about Hordes of the Underdark, one of the expansions to Neverwinter Nights.
Deekin is a most loyal friend, a king of one liners and -as time passes- a pretty powerful bard/ red dragon disciple ( if you want him to walk that path ). To hear him sing " I´m gonna live forever.." with his raspy voice is worth the money alone. Great stuff!

From what I remember of previous discussions on that topic, the D&D kobolds typology history is about as such:

1e: Reptilian
2e: Doglike ("there's more than enough reptilian humanoids anyway!")
3e: Reptilian again ("back to the source!")

FWIW, in the 1e MM, "The hide of kobolds runs from very dark rusty brown to a rusty black. They have no hair. Their eyes are reddish and their small horns are tan to white. They favor red or orange garb. Kobolds live for up to 135 years." The kobolds in the illustrations have scales and doglike (aside from the horns and elflike ears, anyway) heads.

I kind of like the notion that kobolds are related to dragons; a connection between the weakest and the strongest monsters appeals to me in some weird way.

Back to lurking now. ;)

The only quotes I can find that indicate kobolds being 'dog-like' are a) in the 2nd ed Monstrous Manual, and its states that they have a wet, dog-like smell and b) the basic D&D stuff that states dog-like, but have scaly, rust-brown skin and no hair. So even dog-like, they are still reptilian… everything else was reptilian through and through…

The funniest thing I saw in my research was the entry on Gnolls in the D&D Rules Cyclopaedia: “…Gnolls are rumoured to be the result of a magical combination of gnome and troll by an evil magic user…” – Don’t remember having heard that one before!

In fact, humans are the combination of an evil wizard combining a chimpanzee with a naked mole rat. Elves are chimpanzees combined with hairless cats, and Dwarves are chimpanzees combined with Karl Marx.
