So...how do you pronounce it?

Ixitxachitl.

I tend to just sound these out as i go from the spelling "Icks it zack it'll" but I've never used or encountered one.

"That weird-arse manta ray thing that nobody knows how to pronounce."

Seriously, I'm hopeless with pronunciation. We were calling liches "likes" for ten years because nobody told us it rhymed with "itch."

I pronounce it Shah-Me-Say!
Or SHA - SHE - me :)

I would take a clue from the world of science where the study of fish is: ichthyology.
/ICK - the - AH - lo - zhe/

My gut feeling tells me that the original pronunciation was a bastardization of the Latin root ickthuis or ickthyuz. Of course, /icks-it-ZACHIT-tyl/ is as close as we'll probably ever get to the unknown original pronunciation. :D

Appendix G (p. 238-243) of the Dragon Compendium features a lengthy (and quite handy) "PronunseeAYshun Gyd." It lists Ixitxachitl as "ik-ZIT-za-chit-ul."
That is a reprinted article from Dragon magazine #93 compiled by Frank Mentzer.

When I started the thread that was linked a few posts above, I wanted to create a master pronunciation guide. I finally got my hands on both the old & new PronunseeAYshun Gyd articles but I never had the urge to update that thread. There's a crapload of words in that article! :p
