So...how do you pronounce it?

I've recently started running the Savage Tide campaign from Dungeon magazine. In There Is No Honor the group will eventually encounter something called an Ixitxachitl. Now, looking at the MM I was able to determine that it's similar to a manta ray, but nastier.

What I was not able to figure out, however, is how to pronounce Ixitxachitl.

So how would you say it?

If the word is meant to be pronounced in accordance with an Aztec pronounciation (of which I am certain), phonetically, it would be ... "ee-she-cha-chee-tl" or "ee-jzee-jza-chee-tl"

"jza" as in jzadirune

The girl I live with is of Mexican/Aztec descent and she just confirmed this.

I have no reason to think that this is right, but I've been pronouncing it "ICKS-it-ZAT-chuh-tul" for the past 25 years or so. Or, rather, I guess that's how I WOULD pronounce it if I ever had cause to say it out loud. That's how I think it, though!

According to the 2nd Edition Monster Manual (the only thing I've found so far that has a pronunciation guide for the little buggers) it's ICKS-it-ZATCH-i-tal.

I pronounce it correctly :) : Ish-it-shach-it-l (q.v. AD&D 2e MM) Though there is a variant pronunciation in the MM from what I recall.

I'm working on an ixitxachitl encounter for my campaign, as well. Their leader, a vampiric variety, is in the process of becoming a thrall of Demogorgon.

Appendix G (p. 238-243) of the Dragon Compendium features a lengthy (and quite handy) "PronunseeAYshun Gyd." It lists Ixitxachitl as "ik-ZIT-za-chit-ul."

It doesn't include Iggwilv, however. While I usually just say "ig-WILV" I've heard some people use "eeg-VILF" (imagine a bad german accent). Opinions?
