So...how do you pronounce it?

I go for the Aztec/Nahuatl pronunciation (with x=sh) as well. It looks Aztec anyway, even if nothing to do with Aztec mythology, and it's quite easy to say. I-shi-cha-chi-tl.

Who invented it anyway? Gygax?

Speaking of which, Gygax is another one of those unpronunciatable monster names.

Guy-jacks?
Jy-gacks?
Jee-jacks?
Juy-gash?
Guy-gacks?
Jee-jocks?
Guy-josh?

It's pronounced G(long e)-gah. He's French, you know, and they don't pronounce the last letter.

Actually, it's Guy-gacks.

The Night Below boxed set had a freshwater variant called the Ixan. If I ever have to say it aloud, that's what I'm saying.

My thoughts exactly. I prefer words that are actually capable of being pronounced by mortal tongue.

We had a guy in our group that used to pronounce sahaugin as 'suh HOGGin'. Of course, the rest of us all made fun of him after that.
Ulp - glad I wasn't in your group, since that's how I pronounce it...

See, you wouldn't have these problems if you banned consonants.

I banned vowels from my game. It takes a bit of getting used to, but I figure, if it's good enough for the ancient Jewish peoples, it's good enough for us!

And the Egyptians, the Phoenicians, the Sabeans, the Ugarites, the Axumites ...

In fact the only ancient Semitic language to use written vowels (Akkadian) had so many problems with them that I think it put off all their neighbours for several centuries.
