So I bought a new PS3...

Incidentally I did the media server setup last night. It worked out pretty well - I was able to create a playlist in WM11 and then play it back via the PS3 plugged into my stereo. WM11's a little limited in its playlist features (can't randomly build a playlist for example), but the set up was very easy.

Yeah, neither the PS3 or 360 have a great setup for playing music but it works. 360's is a bit better at the moment.

Thanks for the media streaming tips, guys. I'll try setting up WM11 over the weekend, if I get a chance.

I tried using the brute force approach for video last night. After converting some .avi's using the redkawa video9 freeware, I plugged my media-laden USB drive into the PS3 and they played like a charm, in pleasantly upscaled 1080i.

How was the visual difference when you tried GoW2 on the 1080i compared to the 480?
I don't have GoW2, but here's my --limited-- experience with PS3 upscaling (using firmware ver. 1.90, 1080i through an HDMI cable to an LCD HDTV).

Games: Soul Calibur 3 looked noticeably better. Much, much cleaner. Virtua Fighter Evo didn't fare as well. The character models looked jarring sharp and plasticky, while the backgrounds looked like ass. Looks like I'll be buying V after all. Burnout 3 looked better, but not as much as SC3.

Films: Watched the opening of SW:RotS and it looked fantastic. Then I tried something actually shot using real material like flesh, cloth and wood, ie Master and Commander, which looked nice, but not that much better.

So my hasty conclusion is that the upscaling works better on some sources than others, and when it works its very nice.

Unless of course, it works that same way every time and my eyes are simply knackered...

Thanks! That was pretty helpful and causes me to lean more towards getting both a TV that can handle 1080pi and a PS3. Now I have to start saving those pennies and not spend them on cheap women and beer like I'm wont to do.

The only real RPG for the PS3 so far is Enchanted Arms. Its a port from the 360, so you can pick it up for 20 bucks. Doesn't make full use of te graphics, but its a pretty good story, not in the same class as a final fantasy though.

It is worth noting that LCDs are often not kind to material that is not at their "native" resolution. You might want to try experimenting with 720p and such to see if that affects the output.

I've read that too. But when we first got the TV we went back and forth trying out 720p/1080i w/our cablebox (since it can only output one or the other, regardless of the source signal) and settled on 1080i. So that became the rez of choice.

You can see for yourself on Friday...

Does Oblivion not count as a real RPG? I've been stuck to that game like glue since I started playing it a couple weeks ago.

I'm currently having a lot of fun with Warhawk, Super Stardust HD and Calling all Cars. All of which can be downloaded from the Playstation network. Motorstorm is pretty neat as well. I also have Virtua Tennis, fun game too bad there isn't an online mode.

As for movies, Casino Royale in HD is awesome.
(btw my psn nick is jrconvert would be fun to have some fellow Enworlders on my friends list!)
