So I was more or less kicked out of my D&D group

DarkCrisis

Let her cook.
This all started about few weeks ago. I had just picked up D20 Modern and was skimming through it throughout the session. The DM apparently was very annoyed at this. I asked him how it was any different than them stopping the game every 15 minutes to talk about the Warlord CCG while what I was doing wasn't disturbing anyone else plus I was still paying partial attention.

Well a week later I decide I'd like to spend a quiet evening at home for a change and call up the group to tell them I wont be there tonight. Apparently the Dm was very cross as I was told the day after that my Rogue was made into a NPC and killed in battle. I was upset by having my character killed when I wasn't there but I figured oh well I can make another character.

Well the next week (1 week ago) I go to the game with my new Forsaker (which I called and told the DM that that is what I am playing) (also for some reason he says i have to start at lvl 5 while everyon else is 7) well I sit there for 5 hours cause he doesn't intorduce my character into the game until teh end of the session in the last battle when I am a slave chained to the wall. I attempt to break the chain (and after the battle so do the others) he tells us the chain is adamantite and cursed. So it can't be broken or unclasped unless a dispel magic is cast on it... which as a Forsaker I can't allow. Well the group asks a friendly Giant to bust the chain fromt he wall which he does. So now I have an adamantite cursed chain around my neck but Im free. We head outside and the group decides to teleport back to town (2 days away) I decline and proceed to run there which the DM says I get there 2 days later. Well the group that my Rogue was apart of sells all the loot and divides it amoungst themselves I felt left out cause my Rogue helped get all that stuff but I don't get any reward.

Well tonight I go to play and when I get there the DM tells me I really don't need to be there tonight because my character is still running back to town (I chose to play a Forasaker so I have to deal with the consequences he said) (even though last session I was already in town) one of the other PCs says he will buy 2 horses and meet me and we will ride back together. The DM says no cause the group needs him for the fight about to happen (army going to sack the town).

So I tell him thats fine. I understand (that hes a dick) He says I shouldnt have chose forsaker. I told him I had a Rogue that he killed off. And he tells me I shouldn't have missed that session if he doesnt miss any than i shouldnt either. I point out that one guy missed 5 weeks and another missses them regularly to be with his GF but Hey its fine by me and I left.

Im surprised no one came with me.

Some people benefit by knowing what the groups "rules" are. They're not always written, but it might be worth broaching when you find a new group.

  • How often do you play?
  • What prestige classes do you allow, if any?
  • Do you mind players browsing books if they're not directly involved in the plot at the moment?
  • What do you do if someone misses a session?
  • Do you play straight through, or do you take frequent breaks to eat, talk about other things. etc.

It's a short list, but knowing the answers might prevent misunderstandings like you had.

I wouldnt call them misunderstandings..... why can they stop the game to talka bout another game i dont play but i cant skim a book? Usually when someone isn't there their character is an NPC but not involved in combat... why was mine different?

Well, I agree that you shouldn't be skimming a book during the game, but everything else (including the Warlord chatter) is on the DM and not very nice of him.

Gather another group...

Hell, steal his if you can.;)

Yeah, I was being polite :)

As for the rest, you have very valid points. All the more reason to lay the ground rules before hand. That way everyone knows what to expect, so when the DM does kill your absentee PC everyone will know that he/she is being a total jerk.

I'm going to guess that one was stopping the game for a conversation, and one was ignoring the game.

IMO, stopping the game briefly to have a chat about a shared interest isn't really rude- it's just socialization. Amusing yourself with a book while the game's going on shows the DM that you don't care enough for his game to listen, even when the action doesn't concern you.

Not that you weren't robbed by a pissy DM who decided to play vindictive snarky guy when he should have just talked to you about it.

Like I said, IMO, of course.

Sorry to hear about the rough time you had. I hope you quickly get another group that works out better!

The DM doesn't sound very communicative with you. If he didn't want you playing a Forsaker he should have just told you up front that it probably wouldn't work, instead of letting you play it then sabotaging you.

He already said he wont let anyone play a bard because they can do stuff other classes can do.

I was like no kidding thats what they do, they just cant do it as well as the regualr class. Jack of all trades Masters of none

This guy sounds like someone you wouldn't want be in line at the supermarket with, let alone game with.

It's pretty normal in my gaming groups to thumb through books when one's character is absent, or there's downtime (say, the GM and another player are doing one-on-one that you're not privy to). It's certainly less disruptive than bringing the game to a screeching halt to chatter about other things.
