So Int does NOT add to skills

Basically if I'm a fighter in 3e that wants to be smart, it allows me to get more skillpoints. Granted, its not a great benefit, but its there.

In 4e, I can get a good int and get a nice reflex defense. Problem is dex provides me more benefit. Its much better to have a high dex than a high int. And this seems to apply to every class except the wizard (and perhaps the warlord if he's int based).

So while you could play a smart fighter in 4e and get away with it (ie your defense will still be good), it doesn't seem to give you anything that a dex based fighter wouldn't get (except a few bonuses to some int based skills, which could be absolutely awesome we just don't know yet).
I dunno, man. What do Charisma or Wisdom get that same fighter?

Who knows? Maybe Dexterity is a little too good. Or maybe there's stuff we're not seeing. Could go either way on that one.

Also keep in mind that with SWSE-like skill system it is not usually a good idea to short shrift any ability score. With a decent score you stand a solid chance at making untrained skill checks even if you are not trained in a skill. Under 3e it was vastly easier to dump stat an ability score like Charisma because even with a good ability score you were screwed when it came to level appropriate skill challenges. This axiom only proved to be more true the higher in level you got. I also wouldn't be too surprised to see Skill Focus go the way of the dodo in lieu of feats like the new Alertness that give a smaller bonus with some additional benefit since the +10 gap is a little too large.

Biggest reason to be a smart fighter that I saw in 3e was to enjoy combat expertise/ improved trip/ improved disarm and all those other feats that keyed of Int 13+.

I don't think I ever saw a fighter go for high Int for the skill points because their skill list was so paltry anyway.

I'm not worried about potential for smart fighters in 4e (there may well be some powers which duplicate warblade Int based class abilities, for instance)

Cheers

We will certainly get int powers for the warlord, so the smart fighter might be better modeled by a warlord.

And of course a fighter could also take a warlord training feat (or wizard training feat) to get access to one such power.

Did nobody see that the warlock had a wizard power using his int (ray of frost, not marked as warlock but wizard spell)

Hum, I realise that the halfling is equipped with a short sword, and do 1d6 base damage, not 1d4.

I suppose that the wepon sizes from 3.5 has been scrapped, and we're back to universal weapon sizes as in 3.0.

So the halfling use a short sword for the same damage than a human, but if he want to use a longsword, he would have to use it 2-handed. His short sword is the same as a small long sword in 3.5

That explain why while being a defender he doesn't use another heavier weapon.

What? It clearly provides a bonus to Arcane, History, Religion (!), and Nature(!). Also the current theory is that you take the best of Str or Con for your Fort defense, the best of Dex or Int for Reflex, and the best of Wis or Cha for Will. Combined with clearly adding to hit and damage for most of the wizard's powers, I'd say that Int isn't hurting for things to do.

and don't forget it make a great dump stat for fighters and rogues. :D
