D&D 5E So, is anyone playing 5e in Storyline Mode?

I'm running using the PHB and the Realms (ok, loosey goosey use of the Realms, but still the Realms), but that's it. I'm not strictly adhering to the Realms, nor am I running a WotC adventure module. I don't own the MM or the DMG, so I'm not using either of those other than the free .pdf containing limited info from both hardcovers.

And I'm having a metric ton of fun of doing it this way!

Our group ran Lost Mines of Phandelver, and we're currently in Tyranny of Dragons (about halfway through Hoard of the Dragon Queen and planning to move on to Rise of Tiamat when we finish that). We are using the Forgotten Realms setting, and we're using factions. Is that enough to fit your criteria?

We didn't do it this way because we're trying to follow "the model," though. We just figured LMoP was a good introduction to 5th Edition, and since we enjoyed that, we decided to move on to the next published adventure. When we're done with that, we'll decide what to do next. As for factions, I encouraged the players to join them because they will have roleplay implications in RoT.
Pretty much.

WotC has put a lot of its eggs in this basket, I was wondering if people were actually following the storylines and transmedia elements of them or just doing there own thing.

I should mention that I'm actually playing 5E with two different groups, or rather, running for one group and playing with another. As I mentioned above, one of those groups is doing the modules and using the Forgotten Realms setting. The other group, where I'm a player, is doing homebrew stuff under two separate GMs. One GM is running his own storyline in the Realms, and the other is using his own world(s) as well as writing his own story.

We started off with Dragonspear Castle in a version of Eberron set 30 years after the conclusion of my last campaign. I ran that for the first section and now have changed over to Elemental Evil (which was pretty easy since Dragonspear had that theme anyway). The party have now visited 3 elemental locations (and defeated none) and are on the road to Womford. Since they didn't do any of the Red Larch stuff, I have cut and pasted the Red Larch NPCs and their goals into Womford.

So yes, running Elemental Evil but cutting it to pieces as I feel like it. And it's easy to cut up.

We are running a Tyranny campaign but based on the Expedtitions modules. They are very fun thus far! (We are about halfway through).

Will be doing a homebrew next for my "own" group, and running Abyss expeditions for organized play.
