Ok the party has just reentered the Crater Ridge Mines via the main gate after resting after the initial assault that cleared most of the defenders out of the enterance area. They returned and slew the reinforcements that had arrived and went north until the tunnel forked. Then all of a sudden they had the bright idea to head back south and ride the ore carts south right into the green dragon's lair. Well the dragon greeted them and began to talk to them. The party mage began to grovel before the dragon to plead to be let go. The dragon toyed with them a little and told them to get it something to eat. Well then the Paladin begins casting bless on the party, and that made the dragon angry. Well to make a long story short the casualties were excessive.
The Party was made up of:
1/2 Orc Paladin 6
Human Wiz 5/Rog 1
Gnome Mnk3 /Clr 3
Human Clr 7 (Tejron of Hommlet)

The only one to survive was the Wiz/Rog. He turned himself invisible and ran to a corner of the cavern. The Dragon let him go and began attacking the rest of the party. Soon Tejron was dead and the Paladin was near death. The Mage ran out of the cavern at this point, still invisible. He was the only survivor. Was I too harsh on them? I told the Paladin he was being Lawful Stupid when he began to prepare to attack. But he did it anyway. Time to roll up a new party....

If they were warned (and you said they were), I have no sympathy. Actions have consequences. Pissing off large dragons most often has bad consequences. Darwin has spoken.

it's a tough module

RttToEE is a rough dungeon (though not as rough as its predecessor), players should know that going in. Here you gave them a way out, and they (specifically the Paladin) didn’t take it. It’s sad when one players actions cause the destruction of a party – but it happens, and the players have to deal with it.

On a side note, having a “standard” Paladin in this adventure is tough. Everywhere you look there’s “evil” and trying to fight it is sometimes the worst option. Many Paladin players seem to think that the only good and honorable thing to do is beat evil with a stick, which makes this adventure nearly impossible (my group learned early on that without quick thinking, negotiation and general sneakiness they were not going to get very far)

Yeah, the Paladin was a problem. He was a very devout follower of Heironious and thought all evil must be delt with right away. I tried to give them options to run, but the Paladin said, I'm casting bless then attacking. The bad thing was only the Wiz beat the initiative roll of the dragon, so it got ugly early. I think they did 10 total damage to the dragon before it was over. Ugly...

Same encounter different results..

My party met said dragon last night. They were walking down the tracks, and when they entered the big crossover room the dragon just flat out attacked them. It breathed and staggered half the party, everyone was moaning and scared. The party Rogue won initiative, threw his Bead of Force from way way back, and the DM (me) rolled a 1 on the Dragons save. So the dragon gets stuck in a Force Bubble and hits the floor. The party Psion realizes she has an indirect power that can hit through a Wall of Force, so she uses all her spell points for the day but manages to just barely kill of the Dragon in the bubble. End of Dragon.

Everyone was scared less for a moment though, then fate steps in. heh. YMMV
