Pathfinder 1E So what did the ENnies do for publishers besides PAizo and WOTC?

Effects the ENnies have had on you...

  • The ENnies got me to look at new stuff I would not have looked at otherwise.

    Votes: 48 63.2%
  • The ENnies got me to buy stuff I would not have bought otherwise.

    Votes: 18 23.7%
  • I'm an RPG whore, I would have bought the stuff no matter what.

    Votes: 10 13.2%

So what has the ENnies gotten you to look at, and most importantly to the publishers, to buy?

Not a damn thing.

I find it to be utterly pointless and boring.

I should probably point out that I feel the same way about all awards, it's not specific to the ENnies. Grammies, golden globe, oscars, etc. All just a waste of time and money.

the ennies mandate isn't to generate sales - although if they do have that side benefit, then i'm sure nobody will complain.

The ennies are to award recognition to those who work in the industry. It's a way for the fans and peers to step up and say "well done! You did a fine job there!" to some people, i'm sure that doesn't matter, but to others it has a value in of itself.

for myself? The ennies have exposed me to things i'd never have looked at before - even from big mainstream publishers. It may be a tiny industry, but there's a lot of product out there every year, and a shortlist of things to check out has value to me as a consumer. The fact that that list has been through the process it has - judges nominations then fan voting - gives me confidence that, while i may not agree with every item's place on that list, in general it will be a list of quality stuff. The sheer number of people involved make it more valuable to me than a single reviewer's subjective opinion, for example.

qfat!

We use the nominee list as a shopping list at GenCon and go and check out everything.

I love meeting the designers, they are just so enthusiastic!

I have bought Qin and Monsters and Other Childish Things. Qualidar got HEX and a few others.

We didn't make it this year, but I now want to pick up Mouse Guard, 3:16 and CthulhuTech.

These are products that I have purchased or still want to purchase, but mostly due to reviews or blogs discussing rules in play. But not because of the Ennies.

Admittedly though, if the products I become interested in have an Ennies Gold or Silver award, it certainly helps.

I've purchased 3PP from those just nominated, but I've never made a purchase decision on who actually wins. The reason why is that when the nominations are up I actually go look up each of those products and if something strikes me as particularlly interesting, I buy it.

If it wasn't for the Enies I'd own half as much 3PP products as I do now, so they (some of them anyway), should be happy to even be nominated.

The Ennies is where I also start my shopping list. Just being nominated makes me look at stuff.

Doesn't mean I'll buy it, but I will sure as hell check it out. Just another info source that I use when making purchasing decisions.

Yeah, I don't think the ENnies purpose is to generate sales. If it does, wonderful, but that's not the point (man, I'm kinda echoing PC, here, I guess).

People that already like a product will vote for a product, and that product will win if popular enough. So people already know about this stuff. I learn about new stuff from reviews and threads here and at RPG.net long before they become ENnies nominees. And if you vote or care about ENnies winners, you're probably like me. If not, you likely don't know what the ENnies are (and probably aren't reading this either :p).

I knew Mouse Guard was a highly touted game for a long time. I've owned Dark Heresy since it was released. I knew a lot about and have visted Obsidian Portal months ago. Really, I'm not going to buy something because of an award, but because I've researched it and it looks like something I'd like (or I'm a fanboi and I buy something sight-unseen :p)
