Frying a cop was the highlight of the game? I hope it was a corrupt or sadistic cop (or a not-so-nice PC party)!
Perhaps I should elaborate on "cop"
New Hope, more commonly known as No Hope, is the galaxy's official poorest city. The only government is starvation, the only moderator of actions is drug addiction, the only way to stay alive is to make sure that all oposition is not. Not on the "100 nicest places to live" list, not by far.
One way that a neighborhood can hope to still remain a neighborhood on tomorrow is to hire a mercenary police organization. These guys are typically called Merc Cops. They wear big suits of plastic armor (+6 DR), with beamsword projectors on the wrists, and carry the most high-powered burst weapons available. And they are expensive.
The main threat that cops pose is their stupid macho alignment. They like to think that, because they have big armor and powerful weapons, they can blow up anything they want. Usually, they are right. Not today, however.
And yeah, this was a pretty damn sadistic cop. All mercs are. You get used to sadism when you regularly see the effects of misfiring a burst laser in a heavy crowd.
Hell, you get used to it when you *hit* *every time* in a heavy crowd.
On the round before Corlon charged, kicked the blaster into the air, then caught it and opened fire, that cop had missed pretty badly. 6 bloody smears that used to be peasants.
The other cop also eventually got nocked down. The PCs took both their burst rifles, then got pulled through a time warp. The burst rifles were particularly inefective against the mountain troll, even the direct hits barely scratched it. 22 HP, DR 8, pretty hard to kill.
Oh yeah, when it's tipping boulders off the cliff onto you, and you can't even see it, it's even harder to kill.

Diplomacy is *the* strategy game. Literally no luck involved.
It's a WWI sim game. Not turn-based, all players (usually 5 to 6 of em) write their moves down at the same time. You make alliences, you make enemies. all good.
You have to outnumber your target. if you don't, you bounce. If you do, you occupy the territory now. Try to get as many territories with supply centers as possible, for each supply center you have, you get a new army after the Fall turn. (I.E., you reset your number of armies to equal your nubmer of supply centers after Fall).
there are two types of unit: Land and Sea. Armies stay on the land, Fleests stay in the sea. Fleets can use their move to convoy an army.
The board's a big map of Europe, and the powers are Germany, England, Turkey, Austria-Hungary, Russia, France, and Italy.
Pretty cool game all round.

I've heard of Diplomacy. My boyfriend and his friends talk it up like it's the Holy Grail of Gaming...they always end up playing Civilization instead.

I can sympathize with that. I haven?t really played D&D since Christmas of ?99, we may have made it to January, but I?m not sure.
The game I was talking about is an Exalted game that?s somewhat infrequent and my one friend ate some Chinese food of indeterminate age (what was he thinking?), so we may not be able to play at all (there being only three of us).

(don't ask why, I'm just interested in game theory right now. It's really very interesting, possible applications to DnD would be "should I engage in Melee vs Ranged," "should I talk to or brutally murder this NPC," and so on. However, it might not have very acurate results, as Game Theory assumes that the game is a contest, and this is probably the most debated issue about RPGs ever.)
