D&D 5E (2024) So What Is Winter's Mysterious D&D "Season of Champions"?

As reported today, WotC has announced three 'seasons' for 2026's Dungeons & Dragons releases. These are the seasons of Horror, Magic, and Champions, respectively.

Summer's Season of Horror is focused on a Ravenloft sourcebook and accessories. Autumn's Season of Magic is a sourcebook called Arcana Unleashed, and an accompanying adventure.

And in Winter 2026 there is a mysterious "Season of Champions"--but we don't yet know what that is.

The two most popular guesses are the long-predicted Dark Sun content, or a martial-themed sourcebook to follow Arcana Unleashed.

What's your guess for Season of Champions, running from October 2026 through December?

My guess is the long-predicted dark sun set. If we are going back to the beginning, so they can reimagine some of the most problematic content out, then Champions working together to overthrow the Dragon King of Tyr makes a lot of sense.

I also think the seasons are going to primarily tie into the new encounters program, so they don't need to map to the books perfectly as long as they are close.

AND WotC made a huge deal about reconciling with Hickman & Weis...

And Weiss specifically said we would hear more about what was discussed in August...

It is a decent speculative possibility, though I think the UA evidence suggests Dark Sun is brewing.

OK, soooo I do think that Dark Sun is the most likely eventuality...

But with Lord Soth right on the schedule:

The Champions playing nicely with the historic "Champions of Krynn"

But most of all, WotC also just dropping that Raistlin and the other Heroes are coming to Idle Champions...DL classic modules being updated feels very possible:

Ooof, if they do Dragonlance for Season of Champions, then I'll get off the hook and avoid TWO releases this year :-D.

When I read "D&D champion" my mind thinks about 3.5 Complete Champion

After the 5.5. "Complete Arcana" according the marketing strategy should be a "Complete Combatant" instead divine for the players who would rather no-spellcaster classes.

The name of a season for Dark Sun should be some thing like Wasteland and it would be generic post-apocalypse, not only Athas/region of Tyr

That said, I've always believed that Dark Sun (and most post-Apocalyptic settings) is largely about hope with a dash of survival. The survival fuels the hope.

You know, hope is is a mistake.... If you can't fix what's broken, you'll go insane.

There isn't a single English word which hasn't had 'punk' appended to it for a TTRPG project at this stage.

Wraeththu falls into the well-worn TTRPG category of "twinkpunk" clearly.
